Enjoy a Train Ride

Train rides can be extremely boring, but knowing how to properly waste time is skill that comes in handy on these trips.

Steps

  1. Bring a book or a magazine. Don't read if you get motion sick easily, though.
  2. Chat with your neighbor. Talking can do wonders to relieve boredom.
  3. Sleep. You can always use more.
  4. Bring your iPod or mp3 player.
  5. Play games to keep your mind off the distance. Cards are always great to play, and so are guessing games.
  6. Bring a portable game console. It's also a good idea to bring a few games, but don't go overboard. Four or five is enough,- any more and you risk losing them in the train.
  7. Look out the window if there is good scenery or something interesting to look at. If not, it is best to just stick to the activities above.
  8. Download a movie. Movie can kill two or three hours, but remember to watch an appropriate one.

Tips

  • Most people find it more comfortable to face the direction of travel, particularly if they are prone to motion sickness.
  • Don't be too loud on the train. This counts for your music as well, use headphones and keep the volume down!
  • Depending on which country you are in, your train may/may not have a toilet on board - if not, go to the toilet before the train departs.
  • Don't sleep when you're going to arrive at your destination in less than an hour.
  • Avoid bringing inappropriate media with you, as you just might offend the person sitting next to you.
  • Move your legs in a circular motion to increase blood flow.
  • In some countries the platforms are kept shut to passengers until a certain time before the train departs. In these countries, it is advisable to get to the train station at least 10 minutes before departure
  • Snacks are dandy, but avoid the nuts. It seems almost everyone is allergic to them. Try raisins, or marshmallows. If you are on the Shinkansen in Japan, get snacks from the vending machines located in the vestibules between cars. In the United States, a Cafe Car is available on most Amtrak services. Major express routes in the United Kingdom have a buffet and restaurant cars, whilst other routes which go long distance, but not major or high speed have a trolley service, with an attendant serving drinks and snacks to your seat and other passengers at reasonable (if not slightly inflated) prices. The trolley service mainly happens on selected parts between a route.

Warnings

  • Things can get lost easily. Know that once it's gone, it just might be distributed among the train staff (so be sure not to leave anything important, like your kid).
  • People get very annoyed at blabbermouths, more so if they're sitting next to one. Keep conversation to a minimum, especially if you're talking to a stranger.
  • If you are bringing something portable like a Nintendo DS use headphones to keep the noise to a low
  • A train is no place for love actions.
