Explain Air Travel to Children Before a Trip
Your kids may think “Wow!”, when you mention a vacation, but may be totally unprepared when you tell them to get on a plane. These tips will help if you've NEVER taken your kids on an international trip with more than 2 flights each way.
Steps
- On the big day, wake them at least 5 hours before departure, 2 hours to get ready and slack a bit, 1 to reach the airport, 2 hours for check in and security check.
- Pack a backpack for each child. Teens can carry a duffel bag small enough to fit in an overhead compartment.
- Explain that check in means to say you've been taken on the flight, then they take the big suitcases and put a tag on them, and send them to the plane.
- With all the security attention these days, make sure they aren't afraid of the security check. Tell that the security check means to remove jackets, boots or shoes, and loose things, plus the carry-ons in the x-ray to make sure that nothing happens to the plane.
- Board the plane with them. Wait until everybody is with you, don't let your kids trail behind, go as a group.
- Lead the offspring through entry procedures.
Tips
- Don't lie to your kids, tell them the truth. But don't overload them on information that's not important or does not apply to them unless requested to.
