Get On Your Teacher's Good Side

Ever feel like a teacher hates you? Maybe it isn't your fault, but maybe it is. Turn their frown upside down by applying these tips to your everyday life! They are human beings too!

Steps

  1. Keep up with your school work. Teachers hate nothing more than having to force students to do their homework and see the kids' eyes roll (that can sometimes be insulting). If you really want to be a teacher's favorite do extra work or put extra effort into all of your work. Who knows, you may even get extra credit for it! Show interest in the subject your teacher is teaching.
  2. Always make sure that your teacher feels like they have been missed. For example, a teacher has been off sick for a while, just come up to them and have the courage to say 'Glad to see you back Sir/Miss! It will make them feel happier.
  3. Get him/her a gift. You could buy them a cheap present like a candle but making something yourself really shows them your appreciation.
  4. Always keep your supplies organized. This will show the teacher that you really care about your education, plus it will help you keep track of assignments!
  5. Be punctual. That being stated PLEASE DON’T SKIP CLASS! Always being late or not showing up at all is the quickest way to get on a teacher’s bad side. If you do happen to be late, however, explain your reason (if possible, bring a letter from a parent or a pass) and apologize.
  6. Don’t go overboard. Be nice but don’t overdo it. A well placed compliment and general courtesy will get you so much farther than being a suck up. Be friendly, but again, not too friendly. Humor can get you far, but jokes at inappropriate times are very detrimental to your status. Find out how friendly you can get with your teacher be observing how she interacts with your class and the other students. See what advice other students have to give about her. If she is super serious and permits no nonsense, you should be very well behaved in that class. If she seems more friendly, try joking around with her, making a few interesting and preferably relevant comments or jokes on the same topic as the lesson, but stop if appears to be upsetting or annoying her.
  7. Be polite! Brown-nosing is not appreciated. Teachers are your superiors, and deserve the utmost respect. One of the oldest and best ways to win someone’s favour is to BE POLITE. Let your teacher see that you are glad to be in his/her class. It is as simple as that. Compliments are always good, but please don't go overboard and be a suck-up. Thank them for the lesson and be very courteous. Remember they are people too, no matter how alien they seem at times. You can offer him/her help if it appears she might appreciate it, but if she refuses you, do NOT make it a habit, it will only annoy her.
  8. Never gossip about the teacher to your friends. What goes around comes around, so mind what you say. Complaining about tests or homework is generally accepted, but personal insults or attacks are not. Show interest and express your sincere thanks after the explanation.
  9. On special occasions like Christmas, Birthdays and Teachers' Day, It is okay to give them special tokens of appreciation. It is optional and if you do decide to give a small gift it doesn't have to be an expensive item; it can be simple or handmade. It should not be anything too personal, but can be a little personal; for example, if she always talks about a special pet she has, get her a themed picture frame. A safe bet is something for the subject she teaches, like a poster in French for French class. Books are good.
  10. Ask questions! Teachers like students who are curious to know more about something. Just do not ask too many questions. One here or there is okay, it shows you are paying attention.
  11. If you feel that if your teacher is frustrated tell them that you hope they feel better after.
  12. Talk to them! If you have the last class of the day, tell them a joke or something you know will make them laugh. Or when you leave, say, "Bye! See you later!" Maybe when you see them walking in the hall wave to them or say hello. Teachers like students to be themselves around them. Sure, the occasional polite student is disciplined but teachers are more likely to go for the people who mess up and are ok with it! Have a good attitude and be confident.
  13. Do not bribe the teacher. He or she is unlikely to accept the bribe but you might get in trouble! Better safe than sorry.
  14. Some teachers do not enjoy their jobs and nothing can be done about their temper. Don't feel bad. These kind of teachers are really very hard, almost impossible, to be won over. You can do that by being really good in their subject and never doing anything less than perfect. Who knows, you might even change their views about their job!

Tips

  • Swearing and slang is a big turn-off; do not ever use it at school. At least not around teachers and administrators.
  • Teachers watch students for their treatment of other students. If you are mistreating others, the teacher will have little respect for you.
  • Always be neat and tidy!
  • Never make your bad habits obvious.
  • Smile when your teacher walks into the classroom and participate throughout the lesson.
  • Don't "fake it". Your teacher is smart enough to see that you don't really care about the subject. "I really DO think that the birthplace of General MacArthur is a fascinating place. Could you tell us more about it? Please?" Teachers would rather you tried hard in something you may not enjoy than feel that you are making fun of the topic.
  • Don't be phony with the teacher. If one day you're throwing spitballs and getting detention, then the next day you're kissing up to the teacher, (s)he will know something is up.
  • Try to understand your teacher, and you'll have a much easier time. If you do not, ask them to clarify.
  • Be as subtle as possible with your compliments, nothing is worse than your teacher knowing you are sucking-up!
  • This good relationship between you and your teacher may be advantageous. S/he may allow you re-take tests if that is within regulations, and might offer you extra help if you ask for it. Be careful not to overdo it on the last one, because this will cause a great amount of people to hate you. Also, if you forget a homework assignment, try flipping through your binders as he/she passes by - often, they will let the missed homework slip. Be sure to have it the next day, though.
  • Always participate in class and if you have the wrong answer, don't show them that you feel bad because teachers don't like students to feel bad.
  • Do extended work and research into a subject you have been working on in class, this shows your genuine interest in the subject.
  • Have a good mood.Do not show attitude.The teacher will not like this and it will not help.
  • Be yourself.
  • Always greet your teacher in the morning with their name.
  • When she smiles, smile back! She will be even more happy and laugh when she says something funny!
  • Be a great student. Study hard!
  • Try as hard as you can on a subject. Even if you don't like the subject still work hard. The teacher will see you are trying to work hard and you might get a pat on the back!
  • Humor is always a good thing if you don't overdo it. It can ease up the mood of the teacher if they are having a hard time.

Warnings

  • Never overdo it! The teacher will get sick of you and then you've achieved the opposite effect!
  • Don't cheat or do anything worth suspension during any of your teachers' classes. They might no longer trust you and take no notice of you at all.
  • Participate in questions you know the answer to, because your teacher could just call your name to answer a question you don't even know.
  • Whatever you do, don't play a prank on your teacher or tell harsh jokes, or the face he/she'll make may be the last thing you'll ever see.
  • If s/he doesn't call you out in class during recitation anymore, don't feel you've been replaced. She just wants to know about your classmates, too. So don't stop putting your hand up because eventually she/he will restart to call you out in class.
  • Don't pay attention to any of those taunts like 'Teacher's Pet'. The offenders will get a poor record, so then who'll have the last laugh?
  • Make sure not to eat or chew gum during class.
  • Giving presents to a teacher might be considered bribing and not all teachers see this in a positive light, so be careful! In some cases, it's against the rules.
  • At the end of the day, working hard is what counts. Do you really want to please your teacher for just one year? Be yourself, and do what really matters.
