Get Wifi on Your Nintendo DS or Wii

So you just bought a fancy new game for your Nintendo DS or Wii, and you see that you can play with friends online with Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (Nintendo WFC for short). But maybe you threw away the manual (tsk tsk). So what do you do?

Steps

Nintendo DS

  1. Insert your Nintendo Wi-Fi compatible game into the game slot.
  2. Turn on the system and load the game.
  3. Find the Wi-Fi Settings. Where you go to find them is unique for every game, so you'll have to explore the menus a bit.
  4. Touch "Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Settings" then touch a blank box that says "none".
  5. Touch "Search for an Access Point". Your DS will now start to look for an access point.
  6. Select your router's SSID. Input your WEP code, if you have one.
  7. Wait. The DS will test your connection settings, which may take a couple moments. Be patient.
  8. Success! You have connected to Nintendo Wi-Fi!

Nintendo Wii

  1. Turn on your Wii.
  2. Select the Wii logo in the lower left side of the screen. This will bring you to the Wii options.
  3. Select Wii Settings.
  4. Scroll to the second page, and select "Internet".
  5. Select Connection Settings.
  6. Select a box that says "none".
  7. Pick the appropriate option.
    • If you have a wired connection, then your Wii will test the connection and you're done!
    • If you have a wireless connection, then continue to follow the steps.
  8. Select the appropriate option.
    • If you have a wireless router, select "Search for an Access Point and follow steps 6-8 in the Nintendo DS instructions.
    • If you have a Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector or an AOSS compatible access point, follow the simple on-screen instructions.
  9. Success! You have connected to Nintendo Wi-Fi!

Tips

  • If your SSID is not shown when the Wii/DS has found an access point, it's recommended that you go to Manual Setup.
  • While you're searching for an access point (if you have a wireless router), make sure that if you have a cordless telephone, it is turned off. Most operate on the same frequency as a wireless router and may (probably will) interfere with the wireless signal. Cellular phones do not apply to this rule.
  • When finished, you will have to exchange friend codes with the person you'd like to play with. This varies for every game, but basically, you find your friend code and give it to your friend while he/she gives you his/her friend code. Then you will have to input these codes into your game and wait a moment, and then you can play!

Things You'll Need

  • A Nintendo DS or Wii
  • A wireless router (one that you own and that is connected to your internet)
  • A Nintendo Wi-Fi compatible game for the DS or Wii.
  • A Nintendo Wi-Fi adapter cable

Warnings

  • Do not connect to somebody else's access point without their permission. Not only will it not work as well, it is also illegal. Don't do it.
