Use a Wired Connection to Connect Your Wii With the Internet

This will teach you how to connect your Wii to the Internet using a wired connection. A Wii Ethernet connection is much simpler to set up and usually has much better network performance.

Steps

  1. Plug the Ethernet end of your connection into an open Ethernet port on your Switch, Hub, Router or Gateway.
  2. Connect the USB end to the back of your Wii. It should look like a plain rectangle.
  3. From the Wii Settings in your Wii Menu (lower-left corner), select internet settings. Ethernet connections do not require security setting adjustments in Wii configuration, so simply enabling the wired connection from Wii settings should be enough to get you connected.

Tips

  • You will probably not want a wire running through your home, so run it from your source, under your house, and into your Wii.

Warnings

  • Network cables use only about 5 Volts DC at a very low amperage, so electrocution from running network cables is not generally a concern. It is always wise to consider all electricity carrying cables to be deadly, so do exercise caution when handling network cables.
  • Electrocution when working with network cables usually comes from crossing paths with a live power line carrying household current (usually 120V AC at up to 30 Amperes), so mind where you are cutting and drilling.

Things You'll Need

  • Wii console
  • Internet connection
  • Wii compatible USB to Ethernet adapter
  • An open Ethernet port on your modem, router, switch, hub or gateway.
