  5. Once you have your file downloaded, find it in iTunes.
  6. Right-click on the song and select "Get Info." This will bring up another screen.
  7. Go to the "Options" tab.
  8. Select a 30 second portion of the song you want to be your ringtone. In "Start Time" and "Stop Time," select the bit of the song that you want to use as your ringtone. Make sure it's 30 seconds long. Toggle through the song to find an appropriate beginning and ending. Once you've done that, press "Ok."
  9. Right-click on the song again and select "Create AAC version." This will create a 30 second snippet of the song for you to use in your ringtone.
  10. Locate the 30 second snippet in iTunes, right-click it, and click "Show in Finder."
  11. Double-click the file name and rename the file extension from ".m4a" to ".m4r."

Tips

  • When recording the music, be sure not to play it too loud or too quiet. Practice a few times getting the right setting. T.V.'s work well and so does the computer, but when recording on the computer, the phone won't be able to play back the entire song (like some rock and heavy metal songs)
  • This won't work if you have nextel.
  • When the music gets louder, move your phone farther away.
  • If your sound isn't very long, it won't repeat.
  • Some phones have a short delay after pressing the record button.
  • It's fun to have the instrumental part of a song before the singing kicks in so people will say things like "hey, i think I know that song!"
  • Not all phones have the recording option.
  • Be sure to record somewhere where it is quiet, because background noises will/might interfere with the sound quality and you'll probably be able to hear them.

Warnings

  • Some phones don't let you record for too long.
  • Some phones won't let you use recordings as ringtones.

Things You'll Need

  • A cell phone with the recording function.
  • A phone with a recording option
  • Music good enough to get quality sound once recorded
  • A quiet place
  • Patience for some as this could take some time
  • A phone which can send and receive sounds and ringtones.
