Steps
- The first thing you need to do is get your computer to recognize your phone when you plug it in. To do this download a driver. It's very easy to download a driver: Google it, download it, and unzip it.
- Download MOBILEdit (MOBILEdit offers a free 7- day trial) and install it on your computer.
- Download Audacity (freeware) or some other audio editing software.
- Plug your phone in and your computer will recognize it as new hardware and go to the "New Hardware Wizard." When it asks what driver to install, choose specific location and tell it to search the folder where you unzipped the driver you downloaded. It should do everything else automatically.
- Once the driver is installed, your phone can now be charged through your computer (not the travel charger) and the program you downloaded and installed in step 2 will now recognize the phone.
RINGTONES
- To edit your ringtones using Audacity, you must first make sure the file you want to import is in mp3 format, and then drag and drop it. Cut out the part of the song you want (I prefer less than 30 seconds, but you can make it as long as your phone's memory will allow). Then, export it as .wav to an easily accessible location (i.e. Desktop or My Music).
- Open iTunes and import the clips you made using Audacity. Then, go to "Preferences" under "Edit" and go to "Advanced" and click on the "Importing" tab. Choose mp3 encoder. For Bit Rate, choose custom and use these settings: Stereo Bit Rate- 64 kbps; "use VBR" box is checked; Quality- Low; Sample Rate- Auto; Channels- Mono; Smart Encoding is checked; Filter frequencies under 10 Hz is unchecked.
- Go to the Recently Added playlist and select all the songs you made with Audacity and right-click on them and choose convert selection to mp3.
- Once you've converted the songs, open MOBILEdit and use the wizard to detect your phone automatically. Go to the files on your phone and then the audio subfolder. Drag the songs you converted from iTunes into that folder and wait for it to finish transferring. If you did it right, you can play the songs by opening the sounds folder in your phone. If it says the file is corrupted, either you are using the wrong bit rate or the song is corrupted and you need to re-import it.
GRAPHICS
- Make sure you've completed steps 1-5
- Open MOBILEdit and make sure your phone is recognized and information is displayed for it. Then go to the Photo Mobile Editor.
- Find the picture you want to put on your phone and click resize and there is an option to make it the size best supported by your phone.
- Save the file as and then go to the graphics subfolder of your phone's file folder. Click "copy from" and go and find the picture you resized and the rest is done by MOBILEdit.
JAVA GAMES AND APPS
- Make sure you've completed steps 1-5
- Open MOBILEdit and go to your phone's main menu.
- At the very bottom of the screen there is a button that says "install Java"; click on it and choose the "jar" game or app you made or downloaded.
- Before you click "Open", pick up your phone you will need it in a second.
- Once you click "Open", MOBILEdit will send the file to your phone. On the main screen you will see an alert for an incoming file.
- Now, flip open your phone and click "Accept", which is usually the left soft-button. You will see that it takes forever to transfer the file, but when it is finished, choose install (unless you had a sudden change of heart and don't want the game anymore).
- It takes a couple seconds to install, if it doesn't, the game wasn't made for your type of phone. Make sure you run the game when it's done installing, to make sure you like it and that it works. If you don't like it or it doesn't work, delete it: it's a waste of memory you can use for more pictures or ringtones (this can be done by going to the Java settings).
Tips
- All audio files need to be in mp3 and pictures in .gif or .jpeg to be recognized by phone.
- If you have dial-up and once you install the driver and you can't connect again, don't worry. What you have to do is restart your computer and then go to the properties of your dialer and make sure the modem isn't the phone, but the one that came with your computer.*
- If you fail to transfer a Java game and the program won't recognize your phone anymore, just turn your phone off and then back on (while it's unplugged).
- All Java apps or games need to be in the format ".jar"
- Make sure the Java apps you download are made especially for the RAZR.
Warnings
- Don't steal music or programs. Don't use copyrighted material without permission or a license. Or else, you risk getting in a lot of trouble.
