Grow a Choko Vine
Choko (Chayote) vines are easy to grow. They are suitable for frost-free gardens. The choko should be planted in winter and you will be able to get a first crop in the following autumn.
Steps
- Purchase a choko. Select one that is healthy, smooth, and free of blemishes or cuts.
- Put the choko into a bowl. Leave it until it sprouts. Once sprouted to a length of 5–{{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}, it is ready for planting in the ground.
- Select a suitable site for planting. It should be a place with a good amount of space to allow the choko to grow wild. It should also have suitable support, such as a fence or a garden shed.
- Dig over the area where the choko will be planted. Add manure or a plant fertiliser. Fix some climbing support, such as trellis or string, etc. that attaches to the fence or shed.
- Plant the choko. Place into the soil, with the top of the fruit and its sprout sticking just above ground level.
- Water well.
- Harvest the first crop next autumn. During the following winter, encourage the next crop by cutting the plant back to three shoots.
Tips
- Chokos can be eaten baked, steamed and pickled, or as a chutney.
