Hashtag on Instagram

One way of drawing attention to your Instagram account is by using hashtags in the 'Description' section of each photo you upload. This enables the users to browse images they want to see, and it can get some good exposure for your post, as well. You can tag a photo immediately after taking it or, if you want to alter a photo's tags, you can do so from your profile page.

Note: These instruction work the same for both iOS and Android users.

Steps

Adding Tags to an Existing Photo

  1. Open Instagram. Use the home screen shortcuts or App Drawer to open Instagram. Make sure that you update the app regularly.
  2. Open your profile. Tap on the person's silhouette icon in the bottom right corner of your screen.
  3. Select a photo you wish to add the hashtags to. Tap on the pic so that the image/video expands to full size.
  4. Open the image/video options/menu. Tap on the three dots in the top-right corner of your screen to open the menu.
  5. Select Edit. This will send you to the page from where you can modify your picture/video's description and tag people in the picture/video.
  6. Type in pertinent tags. Do this by typing each word with a # symbol directly preceding it (without spaces). Try to be relevant; usage of irrelevant or unrelated popular tags on your photo/video might lead someone to report your photo/video.
  7. Tap Done. You have now successfully hashtagged your photo/video!

Adding Tags to a New Photo

  1. Tap the camera or plus icon. This should be in the middle of the bottom of your screen.
  2. Click or take a photo, or record a video. You can do so by either selecting 'Library,' 'Photo' or 'Video' option from the bottom of your screen.
    • If you're posting an existing photo or video, select it from your library. Then click Next and select a filter if desired.
    • If you're taking a new photo or video, use the circle button to take it. Choose the filters and do any editing if needed.
  3. Add tags in the description. Keep your tags relevant; for example, a baker might place "#muffins" in the description box.
  4. Tap OK. This will save your tags.
  5. Tap Share. Your tagged photo/video should now be in circulation!

Tips

  • To tag your photo/video perfectly, add tags that pertain to both the photo/video and your desired audience.

Warnings

  • Excessive tagging--especially when you use misleading tags to garner more views--is considered a "spam" action.
