Henna Your Hair Without It Going Patchy

Henna-ing your hair can be cool, but you've got to make sure you know how to do it. There is the chance it can look weird.

Steps

  1. Use natural body art quality henna. Body art quality henna is usually better quality and has more dye than hair henna, and will give you better results.
  2. Mix it with an acidic liquid, such as lemon juice or red wine, tea and olive oil can also be used and makes it easier to wash out but add just enough so that it is a kind of smooth paste. About 200g for shoulder length straight hair is enough.
  3. Let the henna sit for several hours until the paste has released the dye. If it's brown on top, it's ready.
  4. Wash your hair, but don't condition it. The henna does that for you.
  5. Brush it out, and then brush backwards.
  6. Slide your henna over your hair, so that the roots of your hair have henna on them.
  7. Smear another handful over the rest of your hair.
  8. Repeat last step until your hair is covered. Do the underneath of your hair too.
  9. Place plastic bag (medium-sized with no holes)or cling wrap over your hair so that it covers it completely.
  10. Put a warm towel over it, and tie it in a turban.
  11. Leave on your hair for 1-8 hours (depending on how red you want your hair to be). One hours will give you a slight red tint, whereas 4-6 will give you a nice red. For the most red, try to leave it on overnight or for at least 8 hours.
  12. Rinse out thoroughly. Use thin, cheap conditioner to help get the paste out.

Tips

  • There is no such thing as black henna. This is either indigo, which can dye your hair black, or henna with PPD added, which can cause allergic reactions.
  • The more often you use henna, the darker and deeper your red will become.
  • Henna is actually good for your hair. It's a natural dye, and bonds to the hair to make it smoother and shinier.
  • Smear Vaseline or sunscreen with zinc on the tip of your ears, your neck and around your face where the henna could come in contact with your skin. This will ensure that you don't have red skin too.
  • It will look very orange-red for a few days afterwards, and will then darken to the colour it will continue to be. Check it out in the sun to see the amazing shine henna gives you.
  • You can buy henna from most heath stores.
  • It is easier to apply henna by using a water bottle, just fill the water bottle up with henna with a funnel. It works great to apply it that way with rubber gloves. Try using coconut milk to mix the henna together. It seem to make the henna rinsing easier, and softens hair.

Warnings

  • Be sure to strand test so that you can sure a happy hennaing!!!
  • Make sure you want your hair to be red; henna is permanent.
  • If the henna is not Body art quality, do not use if your hair is bleached or has chemical dyes on it, as your hair could turn green or result in hair loss
