Make and Apply Hair Mascara
Hair mascara is an easy, wash-out way of dying strips or ends of hair temporarily in various colors. All you need is a mascara wand, some hair gel, eyeshadow, and a few basic tools to achieve this fun, funky, and temporary look.
Steps
- Collect your tools. Gather the things you will need for this procedure. They are listed in the list below these steps.
- Take your selected eyeshadow and crush up about half a teaspoon's worth. You can do so quite easily by dumping the shadow in a plastic bag, then using your hands or the back of a spoon, crush it into a finer powder. Loose mineral-powder eye shadows often make this step easier, but they're optional.
- Squirt a small blob (nickel to quarter sized, depending on the amount of shadow and hair) of a clear hair gel onto a plate. Take the eyeshadow powder and mix it into the hair gel to change the hair gel's color. Continue to add eye shadow, stirring constantly, until the gel is saturated with the color and has the same brightness as the shadow alone.
- Prepare your hair by pulling it back into a ponytail and clipping your hair away from the section to be dyed. Small sections closer to the crown and front of the head work best. Decide which parts of your hair you want to dye. Straightening this section of hair is optional, but makes applying the mixture easier and more visible.
- Dip a clean mascara wand/applicator into the mixture and swirl to coat it evenly. Take the piece of hair in your hand and pull it away from the head. Begin to stroke strips of color onto the section with fluid, even motions.
- Use an eyelash comb to gently comb through the sections of dyed hair periodically to avoid hair getting tangled. Use the brush side that is equipped on most to comb sections in between (especially if you're doing coon tails or stripes)
- Continue to apply the color until the desired effect is achieved. Be sure to rinse all tools completely afterward to keep the gel from hardening on them. Also rinse hair before sleeping to avoid transferring the color to the rest of your locks.
Tips
- The darker your hair, the lighter your shadow should be, and vice versa. This ensures that you will be able to see the colored sections in even the darkest or lightest locks.
- Practice the technique on underneath sections of hair one night or weekend to get a feel for the products (how much you need) and tools. This also gives you time to practice and wash it out.
- In some cases, you can also use mascara itself to temporarily dye hair. Mascara comes in many colors, and it eliminates many of the listed steps, but it may be harder to wash out, so test it first.
Warnings
- Keep your tools clean. This means removing mascara from your mascara wand and comb before, and removing gel from all things afterward.
- This can get messy, so be prepared.
- Remember to ask a parent before doing this!
