Keep Unlimited Data with Verizon

Most wireless companies no longer permit phones to have unlimited data. If you have a Verizon account that is no longer willing to "grandfather" your old unlimited data plan, then you can keep unlimited data with a Family Share plan. Learn more about how to keep unlimited data with Verizon smart phones.

Steps

Plan Preparation

  1. Find a copy of your current Verizon plan.
  2. Check that you have a Family Share plan. If you have a Share Everything plan or individual plan, this will not work.
    • This method works best if you have a Family Share plan with both smart and non-smart phones.
  3. Wait until you have a free upgrade on 1 of your phones in your plan. It is preferable to wait until you have an upgrade available on your non-smart, or "dumb," phone.

Upgrade Phone

  1. Do not go to a Verizon store to upgrade a phone.
  2. Sign in to your online Verizon account. Use the administrator account for your Family Share plan.
  3. Find the "Upgrade Device" section of your Verizon account. This page should list all the phones in your current Family Share plan.
  4. Select a basic, non-smart phone that is eligible for an upgrade.
  5. Upgrade the basic phone to another subsidized phone on the upgrade list. Choose a smart phone.

Add Data

  1. Choose to add data on that newly upgraded phone. You will only need to activate this function for a few days. It may be between $20 and $50 per month, so choose a low data limit.
    • Verizon currently charges per gigabyte for their data, in place of the old unlimited data plans.
  2. Wait to receive your new phone in the mail. Once you receive it, activate it with the instructions provided by Verizon and the phone manufacturer.

Switch Lines

  1. Deactivate the new smart phone. Reactivate the old phone that you just upgraded.
    • This process should deactivate the data plan. Call Verizon to verify that you dropped the data plan while switching the original phone back onto the service plan.
  2. Call Verizon Wireless. Tell them you want to activate a phone on another line. Make sure you choose an unlimited data line.
  3. Switch the SIM card in a current unlimited data smart phone into the new smart phone you just upgraded. Call or visit the Verizon store if you have problems upgrading it.

Tips

  • It is a good idea to keep reassessing the costs of your data plan. Verizon sometimes charges "overuse" fees to its unlimited customers, so there may be a point at which your unlimited plan is costing you more than signing a new contract.

Warnings

  • Beware that Verizon is on the lookout for people attempting to change phones and keep unlimited data. As soon as you upgrade your new phone, you are essentially signing a new contract. Do what you can to always avoid signing a new contract. Switch out phones using an activation method that works within the bounds of your original contract.
