Steps
- Decide for yourself why you want to live independently. This is very important. If you don't have a good reason you might regret your choice later on.
- Write down your monthly income. How much do you earn every month? Include all your sources of money.
- Make a list of the expenses you would make living independently. You'd have to pay for your own food, water, gas and electricity. Also include clothing, costs of transportation and the costs of leisurely activities.
- Search for a place to live that suits your budget. Don't expect to be able to live in Manhattan on a $1500 p/m wage.
- Stay independent. You haven't reached your goal by living on your own: you have to be able to do everything without the help of others, including cooking, washing, paying taxes, arranging doctor's dates, planning a trip or even going to the movies.
- Change your mindset. Do you have to fix something? Don't start off by thinking of people who can help you. Try to solve the problem by yourself first!
Tips
- Always keep your house clean. A dirty house can lad to a variety of mental and health problems, and not to mention, if you have kids and/or animals it is considered a form of neglect. A clean house will save you from a lot of problems in the long run!
- To be completely independent of others you need a lot of money. You can still crash at your parents house when you're broke or borrow some clothing from a friend when you have a date. Just make sure you're able to support yourself most of the time.
- Have a jar where you deposit any loose change on a daily basis. It may sound silly, but it will save you a lot of problems if you ever need it!
- If there's someone preventing you from what you really want, such as a clingy partner or an over motherly mom, get rid of them first. You have to be emotionally independent as well.
Warnings
- Being independent doesn't mean being friendless. You can have a great social life but still be independent. Make sure you don't alienate your environment!
