Listen to Your Email from Any Telephone

Accessing email from any telephone requires a system capable of converting email text to speech and playing the converted audio through a regular telephone line. This capability normally falls into the category of unified messaging. There are a few service providers offering this capability, but they normally charge a fee.

It is possible to set up such a system on your PC with a free software program.

Steps

  1. Make sure your PC is connected to the internet such that it can access your email server.
  2. Connect your computer modem to a regular phone jack. The modem has to be voice capable.
  3. Visit http://www.emailtophone.com and download the free program.
  4. Follow the instructions to set up your email to phone program.
  5. Call the phone number of the line the modem is connected to, following the voice instructions to hear your email.

Tips

  • A voice modem is capable of playing audio files. The quality of these modems varies a lot. The key thing to look for is onboard DSP for audio processing. These modems normally cost less than 50 dollars.

Warnings

  • This program also relies on another shareware program called Voicent gateway. You can download a free version from http://www.voicent.com.
