Make Candy Sushi

Do you need an idea for a creative dessert? This fun dessert incorporates Western sweets with a traditional Asian art form. Use some creativity and these instructions to create a tasty dessert to follow a delicious sushi dinner.

Ingredients

  • Fruit by the Foot or Fruit Roll-Ups (preferably green)
  • Mini powdered donuts
  • Swedish fish
  • Pull and Peel licorice
  • Marshmallows
  • Jelly beans
  • Strawberry, caramel, or chocolate syrup.

Steps

Swedish Fish Sushi

  1. Place a strip of Fruit by the Foot (or a thin strip of Fruit Roll-Up matching the length of a Fruit by the Foot) on your working space.
  2. Place a Swedish fish in the center.
  3. Cut a mini-donut in half and place this on the Swedish fish. You can also use a large marshmallow instead.
  4. Wrap the ends of the Fruit by the Foot around the fish and donut (or marshmallow).

Jelly Bean Sushi

  1. Wrap a strip of the Fruit by the Foot around a marshmallow.
  2. Place the marshmallow on its end.
  3. Cut a jelly bean in half and place it on the marshmallow, inside facing up.
  4. Cut some small pieces of liquorice so that they look like fish eggs and place them around the jelly bean half.<p>

Liquorice Sushi

  1. Using a knife, carefully carve a hole in the middle of a marshmallow.
  2. Thread some liquorice through the center of the marshmallow.
  3. Wrap a strip of the Fruit Roll-Up around the marshmallow.
  4. Finished.

Tips

  • For some real fun, serve with chopsticks and eat it the traditional way!
  • Use some strawberry, caramel, or chocolate syrup like soy sauce.
  • You can also use stuck-together licorice in place of the fruit roll up.
  • Make Rice Krispies Treats and use in place of the marshmallow or mini-donut.
  • For a less sugary and more realistic effect, use sliced fruit as the "fish" and inside the rolls, and/or use Thai Sticky Rice (Below) in place of the marshmallow or mini-donut.
  • Incorporate real icebreaker mints to offer a sour flavoring component to these cute desserts.
  • For an icebreaker, you can try setting this up on a platter containing real sushi to see if people can spot the difference.
  • This is really good for a get together or party. If you want to make it look very nice just add little candy garnishes like cut up gummy bears for little fish eggs or in a snack version goldfish for the Swedish fish.
