Ingredients
Chocolate nests - shredded wheat:
- 400 grams (14 ounces) of milk or dark chocolate
- 24 chocolate mini eggs, candy corn, or any other delicious candy (sweets)
- 4 tablespoons (85 grams) honey
- 4 tablespoons sesame seeds (optional)
- 5 shredded wheat bars (available from the cereal aisle of any supermarket)
Chocolate nests - cornflakes:
Makes 12:
- 150g (5.2 oz) plain dark chocolate, chopped
- 150g (5.2 oz) milk chocolate, chopped
- 150g (5.2 oz) cornflakes
- Colored miniature chocolate eggs, 24-36 (optional)
Steps
Chocolate nests - shredded wheat
- Pull apart the shredded wheat into a bowl. Set to one side.
- Break up the chocolate and place it into a boil-proof measuring cup. Then place the measuring cup into a pan of boiling water and allow the chocolate to melt.
- Watch the chocolate. When you notice it has melted completely, add the honey and stir through slowly.
- Pour the chocolate mixture over the shredded wheat in the bowl.
- Add the sesame seed. Mix everything together. It's fairly messy, so using a spoon is cleaner than using your fingers.
- Spoon the mixture into cupcake papers. Press down the center of the mixture with your thumb to create a well and add a few mini eggs, candy corn, or any other suitable candy of your choice.
- Allow it to set. Place the nests in a cool spot, or even in the refrigerator, to set.
- If you do put them in the fridge, don't leave them too long in case they absorb fridge odors, or cover them.
Chocolate nests - cornflakes
- Prepare the muffin pan. Line the muffin pan with paper cases.
- Place both types of chocolate into a double boiler. Melt over hot water, then allow to cool slightly.
- Stir the melted chocolate into the cornflakes. Stir gently to ensure complete coverage of the cornflakes.
- Use a tablespoon to transfer the chocolate-coated cornflakes into the paper cases. Fill so that the cornflakes rise out of the cases in a mound.
- Use your thumb to create an indent for the nest. Push 2 to 3 miniature eggs into the "nest". This step is optional; the "nests" can be enjoyed without eggs too.
- Leave the chocolate cornflake nests to set. When they're ready, simply remove from the muffin pan and arrange on a serving plate.
- Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Tips
- For a healthier dessert, make your own chocolate. Use alkalized cocoa powder, macadamia nut oil, and stevia as a sweetener. Stevia is found in health food stores and some health food aisles of supermarkets.
- Vary the ingredient amounts for the number of nests you wish to make.
- Dry chow mein noodles can be substituted for shredded wheat in Method 1.
Warnings
- If you or anyone else likely to eat this have allergies to sesame seeds, they can be left out of the recipe.
