Make Chocolate Nests

Using shredded wheat cereal to create a nest makes for an easy project that even the kids will enjoy making. The final nest shape makes this a perfect table topper for parties. Add some small Easter eggs for Easter or candy corn for Halloween and you've got a creative, versatile and unique treat!

Ingredients

Chocolate nests - shredded wheat:

  • 400 grams (14 ounces) of milk or dark chocolate
  • 24 chocolate mini eggs, candy corn, or any other delicious candy (sweets)
  • 4 tablespoons (85 grams) honey
  • 4 tablespoons sesame seeds (optional)
  • 5 shredded wheat bars (available from the cereal aisle of any supermarket)

Chocolate nests - cornflakes:
Makes 12:

  • 150g (5.2 oz) plain dark chocolate, chopped
  • 150g (5.2 oz) milk chocolate, chopped
  • 150g (5.2 oz) cornflakes
  • Colored miniature chocolate eggs, 24-36 (optional)

Steps

Chocolate nests - shredded wheat

  1. Pull apart the shredded wheat into a bowl. Set to one side.
  2. Break up the chocolate and place it into a boil-proof measuring cup. Then place the measuring cup into a pan of boiling water and allow the chocolate to melt.
  3. Watch the chocolate. When you notice it has melted completely, add the honey and stir through slowly.
  4. Pour the chocolate mixture over the shredded wheat in the bowl.
  5. Add the sesame seed. Mix everything together. It's fairly messy, so using a spoon is cleaner than using your fingers.
  6. Spoon the mixture into cupcake papers. Press down the center of the mixture with your thumb to create a well and add a few mini eggs, candy corn, or any other suitable candy of your choice.
  7. Allow it to set. Place the nests in a cool spot, or even in the refrigerator, to set.
    • If you do put them in the fridge, don't leave them too long in case they absorb fridge odors, or cover them.

Chocolate nests - cornflakes

  1. Prepare the muffin pan. Line the muffin pan with paper cases.
  2. Place both types of chocolate into a double boiler. Melt over hot water, then allow to cool slightly.
  3. Stir the melted chocolate into the cornflakes. Stir gently to ensure complete coverage of the cornflakes.
  4. Use a tablespoon to transfer the chocolate-coated cornflakes into the paper cases. Fill so that the cornflakes rise out of the cases in a mound.
  5. Use your thumb to create an indent for the nest. Push 2 to 3 miniature eggs into the "nest". This step is optional; the "nests" can be enjoyed without eggs too.
  6. Leave the chocolate cornflake nests to set. When they're ready, simply remove from the muffin pan and arrange on a serving plate.
    • Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Tips

  • For a healthier dessert, make your own chocolate. Use alkalized cocoa powder, macadamia nut oil, and stevia as a sweetener. Stevia is found in health food stores and some health food aisles of supermarkets.
  • Vary the ingredient amounts for the number of nests you wish to make.
  • Dry chow mein noodles can be substituted for shredded wheat in Method 1.

Warnings

  • If you or anyone else likely to eat this have allergies to sesame seeds, they can be left out of the recipe.
