Make Edible Sugar Crystals

This recipe will teach you how to make tasty sugar crystals that are not only delightful to look at but are tasty as well. If you struggle with these instructions, try Making Rock Candy, it's the same thing.

Steps

  1. Tie cotton or wool string around a Popsicle stick or a pencil. Using scissors, cut the string to 3/4 length of the jar you will use.
  2. Heat a small amount of water to boiling. Stir in as much sugar as possible. Usually the ratio is 3 cups of sugar for every cup of water, but it could vary.
    • Note that these sugar crystals will take more sugar than you think it will.
  3. When no more sugar will dissolve in the water, let the sugar solution cool a little bit.
  4. Add food coloring of your choice to the solution. While this step is optional, the food coloring will make the sugar crystals look more appealing.
  5. Pour the solution in the jar. Make sure you don't spill any.
  6. Hang the string in the jar of solution by placing the Popsicle stick (or pencil) over the top of the glass. Again, the string should be cut so there is some room between the string and the bottom of the jar.
  7. Put a tissue paper over the jar to prevent dust from coming in. You could also set the jar into a bowl of water to prevent insects or bugs from getting into the sugar crystals.
  8. Wait seven days until your sugar crystals form. Enjoy them.

Tips

  • Wash the pot directly after use. You don‘t want to scrub sugar crystals. Don‘t leave the sugar water for too long. Everything will crystallize and stick together, resulting in a sugar-filled cup!
  • Tie a clean paperclip - or something else that is heavy and clean - to the bottom of the string. That way, the string will remain straight while the crystals form in the water.
  • When you take out the sugar crystals, let them dry before eating them.
  • Try to leave the jar in a place where no one will bother it.
  • Use a wide jar, or the crystals will stick to the sides of the jar.
  • Loosely cover the top of the jar with a napkin so dust won't fall inside.
  • Don‘t use a jar that cracks with heat.
  • Make sure you cover the jar of solution before leaving it over-night.
  • To make a great treat cover the sugar crystals in melted chocolate.

Warnings

  • If you use too little or too much sugar for this recipe, sugar crystals will not form.
  • Be careful with what you use to weigh down the string. Remember that you will be eating the crystals, so avoid anything with lead or toxic substances.
