Make Kitty Litter Cake

Ready for a little kitty rocha surprise? Do you want to make a cake for a cat lover with a good—and hopefully sick—sense of humor, or just totally gross people out this Halloween? This kitty litter cake will definitely do the trick. Not only does it look frighteningly realistic (without any actual litter or litter box contents, of course), it also tastes really good! To make a kitty litter cake, just follow this recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 package spice cake or German chocolate cake mix
  • 1 package white cake mix
  • 1 large package vanilla instant pudding mix
  • 1 package vanilla sandwich cookies
  • Green food coloring
  • Small Tootsie Rolls

Steps

  1. Prepare and bake the cake mixes. Follow the directions on the boxes, but don't worry too much about pan sizes: we're not going to frost it the normal way! Allow the cakes to cool to room temperature.
  2. Prepare the pudding mix. While the cakes are baking, make the pudding, and let chill in the refrigerator.
  3. Crumble the white sandwich cookies in small batches. You can use a food processor (scrape often to get every little piece), kitchen mallet, or just crumble them by hand. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup.
  4. Add a few drops of green food coloring to 1/4 cup of cookie crumbs. You can either mix them together with a fork or shake them together in a closed container such as a jar or Tupperware. Set aside for now.
  5. Crumble the room-temperature cakes into a large bowl. Toss gently with half of the remaining white cookie crumbs and enough chilled pudding to moisten (not soak) the crumbs.
  6. Make the litter. Add the cake, cookie crumbs, and pudding mixture into a brand new, clean litter box. If you don’t have one, find a large rectangular Tupperware container to act as a stand-in (or sit-in).
  7. Temper your Tootsies. Heat three unwrapped Tootsie rolls in a microwave-safe dish until they're soft and pliable. Pinch off the ends so they are no longer blunt and look convincingly like what cats put in the litter box. Repeat this process with as many Tootsie rolls as you'd like to add, microwaving them in batches of three. Reserve three for the final garnish.
  8. Half-bury the shaped Tootsie rolls in mixture. Sprinkle them with (normal-colored) cookie crumbs to make it look like litter has been kicked onto them.
  9. Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly over the top. This will mimic real litter, where many of the grains are often blue or green.
  10. Heat and shape the last three Tootsie rolls. Scrape them on top of the cake. One can hang over the side of the litter box. Sprinkle them lightly with cookie crumbs to make them look more recent.
  11. Eat it up, yum! Place the box on a newspaper and sprinkle a few of the cookie crumbs around. Serve with a brand new, washed litter scooper for that extra touch!
  12. Serve it with a cow patty for extra yumminess. Take a scoop of chocolate ice cream and flatten it out on the plate. For extra realism, thoroughly mix crumbled shredded wheat with softened ice cream, shape into cow patties, and re-freeze.

Tips

  • Stir the batter well! Although you may find clumps in a litter box, clumps in delicious cake aren't very good.
  • If you decide to skip the green food colouring, drip a few drops of yellow colour onto one spot of the cookie "litter" to make it look like the litter box had been used recently!
  • This cake is not to be made for the squeamish!

Warnings

  • Make sure that the litter pan and scoop are new and most certainly not used.
  • Do not bake the cake in the litter pan.
  • Keep your cat/dog away from the cake. They might try to eat it and could get sick from the Tootsie rolls. They probably won't mistake it for a real litter box, but it's better to be safe than sorry in this case!
  • If you want to preserve the look of using a real litter box but are worried about the plastic, it couldn't hurt to line the inside of the litter box with plastic wrap and just lean the scoop against the side as a decoration. Alternatively, you can make the kitty litter cake in an aluminum baking pan, which you could then place into the kitty litter pan. It has the same gross effect.

Things You'll Need

  • New, clean litter box (or Tupperware lookalike)
  • New, clean litter scooper
