Make Irish Mashed Potatoes
Ever craved tasty mashed potatoes?
Ingredients
- Potatoes
- Teaspoon of salt
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Cup of full fat milk
- 4 tablespoons of butter
Steps
- Peel the potatoes, rinse in clean, cold water.
- Quarter the potatoes with a sharp knife, then place the potatoes in a pot that fits them comfortably.
- Add cold water to the pot, just enough to cover the potatoes. Add a teaspoon of salt to the water and stir.
- Bring the water to the boil and reduce the heat so the water simmers.
- Once cooked put a colander in your kitchen sink. Whole potatoes take around 20 minutes to cook so quartered ones will take around 10 minutes.
- Slowly tip the potatoes into the colander. Leave to drain for 30 seconds.
- Place the empty hot pot back on a low heat, and add the drained potatoes back into the pot.
- Add real butter, some salt and pepper, and a cup of full fat milk to the potatoes.
- Mash with a masher until all the mixture is mashed.
- Smooth the mash with a wooden spoon.
- Cut a slice of butter (1oz each slice)over the mix
- Cover the top of the pot with kitchen paper (the kitchen paper seals the pot), then put the lid on the pot.
- Leave over medium heat for 1 minute. After that's done, you'll have yourself an authentic Irish mash.
- Finished.
Tips
- If you like, add a sprinkling of chopped parsley or chives to your mash; it really does make a difference!
- To test if a potato is cooked use a dinner knife to prod the potatoes in the pot. If the knife slides into the potato as easily as it would on your dinner plate, then it's cooked. Do not use a sharp knife as this will always penetrate the potato
- Do not use unsalted butter- try to use Kerrygold butter for the real Irish taste.
Warnings
- Use caution when using the knife to slice the potato, and the butter
- Do not use baby potatoes.
- Use low fat milk instead of full fat milk for a healthier mash.
- Use unsalted butter and no salt if you suffer from heart problems.
