Make Mint Chutney

Mint chutney is a spicy dip made from mint leaves. It is an extremely flavor condiment, and is served in small quantities. It is one of the most popular Indian chutneys around, as it can be served with almost any food.

Ingredients

  • ½ of a cup of mint leaves, Optionally: separated from stems
  • ¼ of a cup of coriander leaves (Cilantro), Optionally: separated from stems
  • 1 red or green chili pepper chopped
  • 1 ½ tablespoons of red onion chopped
  • 3 tablespoons of lemon/lime juice
  • 5 teaspoons of water (or 2 teaspoons of water and 1 tbs of plain yogurt)
  • Make Salt and Pepper Dip to taste

Steps

  1. Wash the greens in cold water, and pack the mint and coriander leaves into the measuring cups.
  2. Blend all of the ingredients together on medium speed in a blender; blend until the mixture has a smooth consistency.
  3. Pour the mixture into a bowl, and serve.
  4. Finished.



Tips

  • This chutney is versatile, it goes with everything from Eat a Hot Samosa to mashed potatoes; try it on whatever you like!
  • Wash all the herbs before using them. A colander is helpful for this.
  • Use a rubber spatula to remove all of the chutney from the blender.
  • Some people add milk or yogurt to their chutney; this is what gives it a lighter color.
  • Obtain the freshest mint and coriander available, as this will be the most flavorful.
  • This recipe makes ¾ of a cup of chutney.
  • Refrigerated, mint chutney will keep for one week.
  • If the chutney is not to be served immediately, cover tightly and refrigerate.
  • This chutney is not sweet, like tamarind or mango chutney. You can add sugar, if you like, though it is not traditional.
  • Use this chutney as a bread spread to add spice to your meal.
