Make New England Patriots Jello Shots

Are you arranging a football party or just a good bunch of friends over for a game? For fans of the New England Patriots, here's a way to toast your team with a solid cocktail that's an excellent tribute to your favorite team.

This recipe makes 24-30 shots using plastic cups about the same size as the holes in a muffin pan.

Go through these instructions thoroughly before attempting to prepare the dish. It is important to have a good understanding of how all these can be put together. You need to be prepared to set aside a convenient time to keep working through each step until its completion . Don't worry, the result will be well worth it!

Ingredients

  • 1 large box of blue Jell-O (jelly crystals)
  • 1 large box of red Jell-O (jelly crystals)
  • 2 cans (14 oz) of sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups water
  • 8 single packs of Knox gelatin
  • 2 cups of vodka
  • Photo frosting or icing sheets, choose small, round sizes for each print; or use edible paper suitable for printing (optional)
  • FDA approved edible ink in blue, white and red (optional)

Steps

Preparation

  1. Spray each plastic cup lightly with oil. This will ensure that the shots come out with ease.
  2. Place the cups in the refrigerator, so that they're cold when the Jell-O mixes are added to it.

Making the Jello Shots

  1. Assemble the items needed. These are listed below under "Things You'll Need".
  2. Follow the "fast set" instructions for each Jell-O. The reason for following "fast set" is that you need to keep moving quickly with these steps to get the shots to set properly.
  3. Pour 1/2 cup of water into a bowl. Add 2 packets of gelatin to the surface of the water. Mix well.
  4. Pour the bowl of water and gelatin into the saucepan and place on low heat. Stir well, so that the gelatin completely dissolves.
  5. Once dissolved, remove the mixture from heat.
  6. Pour in 1/2 cup of vodka to the blue Jello-O mix. Stir in well.
  7. Remove the refrigerated plastic cups from the fridge and pour the blue Jell-O mixture into each of the plastic cups 1/3 full. Place in the refrigerator to set for around 7 minutes.
  8. Pour the condensed milk into a bowl.
  9. Pour 3 cups of water into a separate container.
  10. Sprinkle 4 packets of gelatin over the top of the water in the pie plate. Mix.
  11. Pour the water and gelatin mixture into the saucepan. Set over low heat.
  12. Stir to help dissolve the gelatin completely, then remove from heat.
  13. Pour the condensed milk into the clear gelatin mixture.
  14. Pour in 1 cup of vodka and stir thoroughly.
  15. Remove the cups from the fridge and pour in the condensed milk mixture over the top of the blue layer that has already set to about 2/3 high of each hole. Place in the fridge to set for around 5-7 minutes.
  16. Repeat steps 3-5 for the red Jell-O.
  17. Remove the cups from the fridge and pour in the red Jell-O mixture over the top of the condensed milk layer to fill to the brim.
  18. Repeat until the plastic cups are filled. Notice that each time, the setting period tends to lessen. You'll need to judge by checking. Place in the fridge until needed.

Adding the final touch

This step is optional as not everyone has access to icing or frosting sheets and edible ink for printing; moreover you must have a certain type of printer for this to work. However, if you do, this last touch can make the shots phenomenal.

  1. Print the Patriots' logo on the edible icing or paper. Follow the instructions provided with the cake printer and edible icing packet or edible paper for aligning the image and printing it. This will differ depending on the brand of sheets and printer you're using.
    • Important! For this step, you must use a printer that is only for food printing or has been extremely well cleaned, so as to avoid toxic ink components. See "Warnings" below.
  2. Leave the printed sheets to dry before handling the edible images.
  3. Trim each design to shape. Set aside.
  4. Release the shots from the cups. Do this by gently pressing the side of each jello shot with your finger and gently drawing to the middle to release its hold on the edges. Use another finger to help leverage out the shots.
    • If they are really sticky, a gentle run of warm water on the back of the cups may help. Take care to have the shots ready to fall onto the plate (not too far).
  5. Flatten cupcake paper cases onto the large serving plate. If you find that there isn't enough space, the paper cases can overlap slightly but don't overcrowd the shots themselves.
  6. Arrange each jello shot to sit on a flattened cupcake paper case, with the widest end down on the plate, the narrowest at the top.
  7. Add each edible design to the shots just prior to serving, once they're neatly assembled on the serving plate. The shots will look amazing with this added on top. Guests can help themselves to a shot simply by grasping the sides of the flattened paper case and lifting to their mouths. They can use this paper to hold the jello shot while they nibble it.

Tips

  • A good idea is to mix up shot sizes, to give everyone a choice.
  • Grab a friend to help; it'll speed things up and make it easier to put everything together neatly.
  • If you don't want to, or can't, make the designs for the top of the cake, consider placing a laminated image of the New England Patriots' design on the plate underneath the shots.

Warnings

  • If you're using an existing printer to make the edible design, it must be thoroughly cleaned to remove toxic regular ink. This may be so difficult to achieve with absolute certainty that you are much better off using a cake printer specifically made for this purpose. If you love making food designs and know of friends and neighbors who do too, pool together to buy a food printer for sharing around; this makes it an economical way to make edible designs from kids' cakes to jello shots!
  • Warn unsuspecting guests that these jello shots are alcoholic; not everyone appreciates alcohol in their "desserts" and not everyone knows that these pretty formations are alcoholic.
  • Consume responsibly. These are alcoholic and should not be consumed by children or anyone forbidden by law to consume alcohol in your jurisdiction.
  • Keep out of the reach of children and pets. These look very appetizing as a treat, so be sure to keep an eye on who can access them.
  • Printing edible icing in your printer can void its warranty should anything go wrong. Talk to the manufacturer or retailer for more information and for confirmation of usage.

  • 2 bowls for Jell-O

  • Saucepan (having 2 saucepans is probably easier rather than wasting time washing one in between)
  • Bowl for condensed milk
  • Pie plate or similar shallow, wide dish

  • Cupcake paper cases, equal to size of the shots, either white or with blue and red coloring
