Make a Collage on Instagram

While in the past you had to find a third-party app for making photo collages, Instagram now offers an add-on called 'Layout' that allows you to easily fit multiple photos together into one post. Making a collage using Layout is as simple as installing the add-on and creating your collage.

Steps

Installing Layout

  1. Open the Instagram app. If you aren't automatically logged in, enter your username and password when prompted and hit 'Log in.' Make sure that you have Update-Instagram.
  2. Tap the Camera or Plus icon. It's located at the bottom of your screen and this will send you to the page from where you can upload pictures or videos.
  3. Tap Library (for iOS) or Gallery (for Android). It's located at the bottom left corner of the screen.
  4. Tap the Layouts icon. It is a small icon located at the bottom right of the photo preview window. It looks like a square divided into three sections. Tapping on it will open a dialog box asking you download 'Layout' app from App Store or Play Store.
  5. Tap Get Layout. This will bring you to the App Store or Google Play store.
  6. Tap Install to download it. The app is from the creators of Instagram so the app is absolutely safe to install.
    • Once it downloads, Android devices will automatically take you back to Instagram.
    • If you're using an iPhone, tap OPEN.
  7. Swipe through the tutorial. When you first open Layout, you will be taken through a mini-tutorial that shows you how to use it.
  8. Tap GET STARTED. This will open the gallery section of the app.
  9. Allow the app to access your photos. Tap on Allow if you're using an Android device or on OK if you're an iOS user.

Creating Your Collage

  1. Tap to select your photos. You can select up to 9 photos to include in your collage.
  2. Tap on your desired layout. The different layout options are displayed in a scroll bar at the top of your screen.
  3. Tap on a piece of the collage to edit it.
    • You can resize a photo by dragging the edges.
    • You can move an image within the collage by tapping and dragging on it.
    • Use the buttons on the bottom of the edit screen to mirror, flip, or replace a piece of the collage.
    • Select 'Borders' to add a white border that separates the images.
  4. Tap SAVE. If you're using an Android, tap NEXT, then skip to Step 6.
  5. Open Instagram. You may leave the app and open Instagram using the App Drawer. Tap the Camera or Plus icon and select your edited image from the 'gallery' section.
  6. Select a filter.
  7. Tap Next.
  8. Tap Share. Your collage will be shared with all of your Instagram followers!

Tips

  • If you want each photo in the collage to have a different Instagram filter, edit each one individually on Instagram then save the edited versions to your camera roll. You can then select them when you choose to make a new Layout collage.
