Make a Duct Tape Cell Phone Case

Instead of buying a fancy, expensive cell phone case at the store, you can make your own from one of the world's most versatile materials––duct tape! With just one roll, you can create a custom-fit case that will protect your phone from scratches.

Steps

  1. Find the cell phone you want to make the case for, and a duct tape of your desired color and texture. Be sure to choose the right size of duct tape (generally the thicker/larger size is best).
  2. Cut approximately four strips of duct tape of equal length.
  3. Circle around the cell phone with the duct tape. Do this with the sticky side facing out.
  4. Cover the bottom of the cell phone with a strip of duct tape around 3 inches, 7.5 cm long, still with the sticky side facing out.
  5. Completely cover the sticky areas with strips of duct tape (sticky side facing in).
  6. Take a 10 inch (25cm) strip of tape and fold it in half. Trim away about 1 centimeter from the side––this will be the case's flap.
  7. Put an inch (2.5cm) of Velcro tape where you want the flap to sit on the cover of the case.
  8. Get the other piece of Velcro that is as big as the first piece, and stick them together.
  9. Attach the flap to the Velcro first, then bring it over the top to the other side and tape it down. If you don't have Velcro, you can use duct tape; just fold the ends so that you know it's the front.
  10. Finished.

Tips

  • Make sure that the duct tape isn't too tight. You want to be sure that you can get your cell phone in and out easily.
  • If your phone displays the time on the outside, you can cut out a slot in your case so that the time can be seen.
  • If you want the case to clip to your pocket take a clothes pin (peg) and glue it to the back of your case.
  • Cut slits in the sides of the finished case so that your phone can slip in and out more easily. However, take care not to make these too wide or the phone may slip out easily.
  • The stickiness of the tape could mess things up a couple of times and you'll end with something similar to a piece of paper.
  • To make the flap stay on better, put a little bit of spit on the sticky side. Extra strength duct tape works best.

Warnings

  • This is a sticky project, so make sure everything unnecessary is cleared away and be careful.
  • Make sure you don't tape your phone on the sticky side!
  • Don't cut slits in the duct tape while your cellphone is in it! You can damage your cell phone.

Things You'll Need

  • Duct tape of your chosen color
