Make a Shadow Knit Piano Scarf

Shadow or Illusion knitting is a process of knitting or purling stitches of two contrasting colors to create a hidden image. The basic idea is that each pattern row is four knit rows. Look from the lower part of the picture to the top and notice the black keys, and the white keys of the piano.

Steps

  1. Use Microsoft Excel to create this pattern or use any graph paper. To create, just mark out on the graph the pattern as stated below. Be sure to follow it exactly when knitting.
    • Row # a - Color 1 - Knit across
    • Row # b - Color 1 - Knit on the white pattern squares, Purl on the dark squares
    • Row # c - Color 2 - Knit Across
    • Row # d - Color 2 - Purl on the white pattern squares, Knit on the dark squares
  2. Repeat to create a larger keyboard pattern. Move to the next row in the pattern and repeat. The entire scarf is about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} in length.
  3. View it from the side at an angle, and notice that the raised stitches mask the layers creating a hidden image.
