Make a Vodka and Tonic

A classic drink made from vodka and tonic water. A neutral tasting drink which won't make you sick.

Steps

  1. Fill a highball or other glass with ice cubes.
  2. Pour 4cl (1.5 ounces) of vodka into the glass, or more if you like your drink stiff.
  3. Fill the glass with tonic water.
  4. Stir with a spoon or other object.
  5. Garnish with a wedge of lime or lemon. This is optional but a great touch.

Tips

  • Experiment with the amount of vodka to suit your taste.
  • Don't skimp on the ice and make sure you use cubes that haven't been sitting in your freezer for weeks.
  • It's preferable to make several smaller drinks, rather than one large cocktail because in a big glass your melting ice will dilute the mix and the submerged lime/lemon wedge will eventually leach out too much acid.
  • You can squeeze some lemon juice before stirring to give the drink some sourness.
  • Diet versions of tonic water will keep down the drinks caloric content.
  • Make sure the both the vodka and tonic have been chilled before preparation.
  • The better the vodka, the better the drink, though the quality of alcohol will be masked somewhat by the tonic (unlike a martini, which is nearly 100 percent vodka/gin).

Things You'll Need

  • Highball glass
  • Vodka
  • Tonic water (for example, Schweppes, Indian Tonic Water)
  • Ice cubes
  • A lime and/or a lemon (optional)
