Perform a Forced Approach in a Cessna 150
If an engine failure occurs and you have gone through the appropriate engine restart check list and the engine has not restarted commence a forced approach. Choose a field in the area to land on. CAUTION: Avoid thick brush, populated areas and roads use only as last resort. When choosing a field choose one with a house nearby for help if injuries. Once you have chosen a suitable field commence the following check list.
Steps
- Maintain airspeed of 60 Kts: At 60 Kts you will have your aircraft's best glide speed which will allow you to glide through the air and maintain a gradual descent.
- Change transponder code – 7700: Changing the transponder code to 7700 illuminates your aircraft on all air traffic control radars within range, advising that you are an aircraft in distress.
- Transmit Emergency Radio call – 121.5: Tune your radio to the emergency frequency, 121,50 and transmit who you are, where you are, how many people are on board and what your intentions are. Ex. Mayday mayday mayday this is Golf Charlie Victor Mike I have an engine failure, I’m {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} southwest of Charles town with 2 souls on board and intentions to ditch.
- Mixture – IDLE CUT-OFF. Pull mixture out to cut off fuel flow from the fuel lines to the engine.
- Fuel shut-off valve – OFF. This will close the fuel valve and will stop the fuel flow from the wings to the fuel lines.
- Ignition switch – OFF. This will ensure that the engine won’t start again during or once you make your emergency landing.
- Wing Flaps – AS REQUIRED (40° recommended): Adjust flaps to the necessary angle needed to gradually descend and land safely on the field. WARNING: Over extending your flaps will increase your rate of descent dramatically and could result in landing short of your field.
- Master switch – OFF. Once the master is off it will eliminate the flow of current to all electrical components and will eliminate the chance of electrical fire on impact. WARNING: Flaps can’t be adjusted once master switch is OFF. Ensure you have enough flaps to make the field before turning master OFF.
- Doors – UNLATCH PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN. Unlatching the doors before touchdown it will eliminate the risk of jammed doors due to damaged body structure of the plane on a ruff impact.
- Touchdown – SLIGHTLY TAIL LOW. Do to unforeseen objects or obstacles a short field landing must be performed to shorten the distance it takes from wheel touchdown and a full stop.
- Brakes – APPLY HEAVILY. Get the plane to a full stop as fast as possible execute with caution.
- Evacuate. Evacuate the plane as fast as possible and move to a safe distance from the plane. If needed activate plane's ELT for search and rescue.
