Deal With an Engine Fire on a Cessna 150

Engine fires on an airplane are critical and an emergency situation for Pilots and passengers. Safety and the correct procedures are very important, with the information given in this article pilots will know exactly what to do in case of an engine fire.

Steps

DURING START ON GROUND

  1. Cranking - - CONTINUE, to get a start witch would suck the flames and accumulated fuel through the carburetor and into the engine.

If engine starts:

    • Power - - 1700 RPM for a few minutes.
    • Engine - - SHUTDOWN and inspect for damage.

If engine fails to start:

    • Cranking - - CONTINUE in an effort to obtain a start.
    • Fire Extinguisher - - OBTAIN (have ground attendants obtain if not installed).
    • Engine - - SECURE
      • a. Master Switch - - OFF
      • b. Ignition Switch Valve - - OFF
      • c. Fuel Shutoff Valve - - OFF
      • Fire - - EXTINGUISH using fire extinguisher, wool blanket, or dirt.
      • Fire Damage - - INSPECT, repair damaged components or wiring before conducting another flight.

ENGINE FIRE IN FLIGHT

    • Mixture - - IDLE CUT-OFF.
    • Fuel Shutoff valve - - OFF
    • Master Switch - - OFF
    • Cabin Heat and Air - - OFF (except wing root vents).
    • Airspeed - - 85 KIAS (If fire is not extinguished, increase glide speed to fine an airspeed which will provide an incombustible mixture).
    • Forced Landing - - EXECUTE (as described in Emergency Landing Without Engine Power).

ELECTRICAL FIRE IN FLIGHT

    • Master Switch - - OFF
    • All Other Switches (except ignition switch) - - OFF.
    • Vents/Cabin Air/Heat - - CLOSED.
    • Fire Extinguisher - - ACTIVATE (if available).
