Enter a Spin in a Cessna 150

Spins are very dangerous and should not be underestimated. However every pilot should know how to enter a spin, as well as recover from one. This is not so you can scare your friends in their first flight, it is in case of an emergency that the pilot knows what to do.

Steps

  1. Perform a HASEL check.
    • H=height (make sure you have at least 3000 ft)
    • A=area (make sure there are no houses or built up areas bellow you)
    • S=secure (seat belts and doors secure)
    • E=engine (make sure your fuel is on both, trim is set, mixture is rich, carb heat is hot, mags on both, master and alternator on,primer is locked, and no flaps)
    • L=lookout (do a good thorough check for other nearby aircraft)
  2. Pull throttle to idle.
  3. Keep plane at same altitude, you will lose airspeed and constantly pull back to keep plane level.
  4. Do not use ailerons, only use rudder to keep plane level.
  5. Stall horn will start to go off.
  6. Apply full rudder to which side you want to spin to.
  7. Pull controls all the way back into your chest.
  8. Keep controls all the way back, or else the plane will pull out of the spin and could cause a spiral.

Tips

  • To Recover:
    • [1] Push the yoke forward.
    • [2] Neutral on the rudder pedals and Build speed.
    • [3] Level the wings to the Horizon.
    • [4] Gently ease back on the yoke until in level flight.

Warnings

  • When you first try this maneuver make sure there is a trained professional pilot on board.
  • Master recoveries first.
