Prepare for the Night Before School Starts

Ready or not, here comes the first day of school!

Take the time to plan ahead and get ready, so you can relax, not panic, the night before, and get out the door comfortably on time the next morning.

Steps

  1. Pick out your clothes the night before, or even sooner. Don't do it in a hurry in the morning. Check with a family member if you need approval or advice on fashion or making sure your clothing matches.
  2. If you wear a uniform, you can still show off your style by wearing a nice watch, nice earrings or nice jewelry.
  3. Get your book bag and any other supplies ready, and have them by the door so you can grab it and go in the morning.
  4. Eat a good dinner, but don't overdo it. Don't drink sodas with caffeine in them. You won't be able to get to sleep.
  5. Get some exercise the day before, but not too late in the evening. It'll help you work off some stress, and it will help you sleep better.
  6. Decide on breakfast for the next morning, and make it a healthy one that will also fill you up. Remember to give yourself time in the morning to eat. A leisurely breakfast will also help you gather your thoughts and arrive at school calm and ready.
  7. Pack your lunch the night before, or have all the parts ready so you can toss them in your lunchbox quickly.
  8. Call up any friends you'll be meeting in the morning, and arrange a time and place to get together. You could meet them at school, or you could walk to school with them, if they live nearby.
  9. Make sure your toothbrush, shoes, and so on are where you can find them. Save yourself the trouble of any morning rushes.
  10. Fill out any paperwork ahead of time, if you must drop it off on the first day of school.
  11. Set your alarm clock before bed. You may even want multiple alarm clocks, just in case you don't wake up. You may still be used to the summer schedule of waking up late. Sleeping in on the first day is something you should avoid, as you might miss a few hours of important introductions.
  12. Ask any questions before bed. You may ask a parent, guardian, or older sibling who's gone to the grade you are starting.
  13. Scout out the school in advance. If you're new to a school, go before school starts and get a feel for where things are and how far apart they are. If you don't have time for this step, though, don't worry. Everybody else is going to be new there, too, so it's no big deal to ask questions, wander into the wrong room, and so on, especially for the first few days.
  14. Get a good night's rest. Take a sleeping pill if you have to. You don't want to stay up all night worrying about everything.
  15. Write in your journal if you'd like to forget about what's to come the next morning, or if there's anything on your mind.

Tips

  • Don't go to bed too late, but don't go to bed so early that you lie there worrying, either.
  • Don't wait until the last minute. You will regret that.
  • Make your own list. If there are things you know you want done, make a list and check those things off as you do them. Knowing that you have everything as ready as it can be might just help you sleep.
  • If you end up not waking up from an alarm clock, make sure you have a family member that would wake you up. Same goes for if you don't own an alarm clock.
  • Be confident.
  • Start getting up a little earlier each day in the week or two leading up to school. It will be easier if you don't see your first sunrise on the first day of school, after a whole summer of waking up at 10am.
  • Don't stress too much about your appearance. Wear whatever makes you feel confident and comfortable, whether it be makeup and a dress or jeans and a t-shirt.
  • Don't rush in the morning. Take your time; it will work out well.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help-- for example, if you need someone to drive you to a store to buy something, ask! If you want a friend's advice on your appearance, they are most likely going to be happy to help you.
  • Don't leave your homework for the morning. You may forget, procrastinate, or something unusual may happen at your house, throwing you off track.
  • If you are going to 8th grade or 9th grade than you will have to wake up early. Go to sleep on time and get a good rest.
  • Make an effort to ensure that you have all your school supplies together in place before you go to sleep. You don't want to wake up on the first day of school and have to get your things in order!
  • Wake up early enough to do everything you need to without rushing yourself and stressing out. A calm morning will make for a calm day.
  • Check your backpack to make sure you have everything you need the night before.
  • Leave at least 10-15 minutes before school starts so you will get there in time.
  • Check your school schedule and then pack all the required things.

Warnings

  • Make sure to place your alarm clock beyond arms' length so that you're forced to get up in order to turn it off. This will get you up and moving much more quickly.
  • Do what it takes to get a good night's sleep. It will make all the difference in how you face the next day.
  • Don't take an overdose! If you take a sleeping pill, make sure to check on the back to take the right dose.
