Print Double Sided

Most home printers require an attachment called a "duplexer" for double-sided printing. However, it's easy to manually print double-sided pages on any printer, just by reinserting the sheets in the regular paper feeder tray.

Steps

Double-sided printing for PC

  1. From the File menu, click Print.
  2. Under Page Range, click the radio button next to Pages and enter the odd-numbered pages (1,3,5,7, etc)
  3. Click Print.
  4. Remove the printed pages from the printer and keep them on the printed side on the bottom with the top of the page towards the printer.
  5. If there is an odd number of total pages in your document, remove the last printed page from the top of the stack and keep it safe for now. If there is an even number of pages, just continue to the next step.
  6. Empty the paper tray and insert your stack of printed pages into it.
  7. Repeat the print process, but this time choose the even-numbered pages (2,4,6,8 etc) and tick the "Reverse pages" box to reverse the printing order.
  8. If you saved a page from step 5, add it to the bottom after printing. This is your final page.

Double-sided printing for Mac

  1. From the File menu, click Print.
  2. In the Copies and Pages dropdown, click the arrow and choose Paper Handling.
  3. In the Pages To Print dropdown, click the arrow and choose Odd Only.
  4. Remove the printed pages from the printer and turn them (face-down) 180 degrees, so that the top text is now the bottom.
  5. If there is an odd number of total pages in your document, remove the last printed page from the top of the stack and keep it safe for now. If there is an even number of pages, just continue to the next step.
  6. Empty the paper feeder and insert your stack of printed pages.
  7. Follow the previous steps to print only the even pages, but this time choose the even-numbered pages (2,4,6,8 etc) and tick the "Reverse pages" box to reverse the printing order.
  8. If you saved a page from step 5, add it to the bottom after printing. This is your final page.

Tips

  • Use the regular automatic paper feeder tray, not the optional manual feeder tray on the top.
  • In Microsoft Word for Mac, you can find out if your printer is set up for double-sided printing by navigating to File > Print > Layout (under "Copies and Pages" dropdown). Look for the option "Two-Sided: " -- if it's grayed out, you will have to manually print your pages double-sided. If not, you can choose between Long-edge (portrait layout) and Short-edge binding (landscape layout).
  • Don't keep flipping the paper from one side to the other.
  • Depending on your printer model, you may need to re-insert the paper a different way round. The above method works on a Samsung laser printer.
  • The exact instructions for double-sided printing vary according to your operating system (Mac or PC), software version, and individual printer capabilities. If you get stuck, consult your printer manual for more information.
