Steps
- Decide what color you want. Make sure it's something you can deal with in a couple weeks or a month or two. After all, it is permanent.
- Go shopping. Find:
- The color you want in your hair (can be permanent or semi/demi permanent)
- Foil
- Clips
- Plastic combs
- At home, find an old shirt that you don't mind ruining.
- Hair bleaching kit
- Find an afternoon where you don't have anything going on. This can be time consuming.
- Section off the piece of hair you want to dye with a clip.
- Clip the hair not in that section up and away from the piece you want to dye. Hair dye can get messy, and you don't want to dye your hair in uneven pieces.
- Follow the directions on the bleach packet. Make all of the mixture, even if you don't think you need it. It's better to have too much than not enough.
- Using a plastic comb, comb the bleach into the section of hair. Don't put too much on the comb or it will fall onto the other parts. Repeat this until you have enough on your piece of hair.
- Wrap the bleached section in foil. Wait about 30 minutes.
- Take off the foil and check the color. Is it light enough? It might take longer if you've dyed your hair in the past.
- Wash the bleach out of your hair. Make sure you get it all out. You can use a shampoo but no conditioner! The conditioner will interfere with the color you're putting in it. Make sure you don't lose the chunk of bleached hair in the mix.
- Dry your hair with a towel or a hair dryer.
- Resection off the piece of bleached hair with clips/bobby pins.
- Open and follow the directions on the color. If it is a semi/demi permanent color, it should already be mixed. If not, follow the directions to mix the dye.
- Comb the color into the streak using a new comb. You may want to put a little more of the color than the bleach in because it is not as powerful.
- Choose either to wrap it in foil or wait, depending on the brand. Sometimes, the instructions recommend you blow dry the section. This can make the color more vibrant.
- Put your hair in a nightcap and sleep with it still in, but do this if using a semi/demi permanent color. The color can soak in and be more vibrant this way.
- Wash your hair. This time, you can use conditioner.
- Congrats! You can now show off your personality everywhere you go!
Tips
- Try to avoid bleaching the hair all the way to white, this strips all the natural pigment from your hair. Dyes stick to this pigment, so your colour will last longer.
- If you used a semi/demi permanent color, you can mix the extra with a conditioner and refresh the color every time you use conditioner. Make sure to only use the conditioner mix on that streak of hair.
- It's a good idea to not buy cheap products when dealing with your hair. After all, it is your hair, and you don't want to mess it up.
- Choose a color that brightens up your hair especially with dark hair.
- The lighter your hair is after you bleach it, the more vibrant the color will turn out in the end.
- It looks better if you don't put the chunk right on the top of your head, but somewhere in your hair, either on the sides or in the back.
- Use hair chalk for an easy, less permanent hair coloring option.
- Don't use a developer that's too strong for your hair, whether it's with the bleach or the dye. This causes a lot of damage to your hair and you might end up with a frizzy-looking streak.
- Using a hair dryer, curling iron, or straightener can fade hair dye. With semi/demi color, sometimes it can completely take out the color. Read the labels to see if it's okay to use these items on your new color.
- Never use household bleach on your hair. It's way too harsh and you could end up with a burnt scalp and your hair will probably fall out. Use a 30 volume (or 40 volume if you have really dark locks) bleach. The Manic Panic brand of bleach is recommended.
Warnings
- Some bleach requires you not to use foil. If it says not to, don't!
- Do not leave the bleach in too long! It can melt and damage your hair beyond repair! (If you want it lighter, bleach it later, preferably tomorrow or in a couple of days, the hair needs to rest a bit in between bleaching sessions).
- Hair coloring can be damaging to hair. Be sure your hair can withstand bleaching and coloring!
- Make sure you are ready to put a streak in your hair! It's permanent.
- Using demi/semi permanent would last a couple of weeks.
