Recover a Yahoo Account

This article teaches you how to recover an inactive Yahoo account. If your Yahoo account has been inactive for over 12 months, or was deactivated for violating the terms of service, you cannot recover your account.

Steps

Recovering Forgotten Account Details

  1. Open the Yahoo Sign-In Helper. This tool uses one piece of your login credentials to connect you to your account.
  2. Enter your Yahoo account's email address. You'll do so in the text field in the middle of this page.
    • You can also enter your phone number if it's attached to your primary account.
  3. Click Continue. It's below the text field on this page.
  4. Click Yes, text me an Account Key. Do this if you have access to the phone number listed on the screen.
    • If you don't have access to a phone number, click I don't have access. Doing so will give you an option to click Start Over, where you can enter a recovery email address or phone number.
    • If you don't have access to a recovery email or phone number, you won't be able to get back into your account.
  5. Open your phone's messages. You should see a text from a six-digit number that says "[8-letter code] is your Yahoo Account Key."
  6. Type the code into the Yahoo page. The code field is in the middle of the page.
  7. Click Verify. It's under the code's text field.
  8. Click Continue. You'll have an opportunity to review your account information on this page, after which you can proceed to your account.

Using Known Credentials

  1. Open the Yahoo webpage. You'll need to log in from here to access your account.
  2. Click Sign In. It's in the top right side of the page, to the left of the Mail icon.
  3. Type in your email address. You'll do this in the "Enter your email" field on the right side of the screen.
  4. Click Next. It's below the email address field.
  5. Type in your password. This field is on the right side of the page.
  6. Click Sign in. It's below the password entry field. As long as your password and your email address match each other, you'll be able to access your account.
    • If you deactivated your account, you'll be able to log into it for 90 days following the deactivation. After that, your account will be gone.[1]

Tips

  • You can sign into an account you deactivated for 90 days after deactivating it.

Warnings

  • Once an account is marked for deletion, you can't cancel the deactivation process.
