Register for the Instagram API

Instagram is an iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad app that allows users to take or select photos from their device and upload them to various social networks and services. The app also provides the ability to apply filters and effects to photos as well as location info and other metadata. The service also provides an API for developers interested in integrating data from Instagram into their applications. This article will show you how to register for the Instagram API.

Steps

  1. Create an Instagram account. If you do not already have an Instagram account, download the Instagram app in the App Store on an iOS device (iPhone, iPod, iPad) or in Google Play for an Android device.
    • After installing the app, open it on your device.
    • Tap the Sign up button at the bottom left of the screen to begin the account creation process.
  2. Sign up as a developer. Go to the Instagram developer login page and login using the username and password associated with your account.
  3. Fill out the form. Enter your website URL, phone number, and description of how you want to use the Instagram API or what you plan to do with it.
  4. Accept the terms. Follow the link titled Terms of Use and Brand Guidelines, then click the checkbox indicating you accept the API terms. Click the Sign up button to complete the process.
  5. Register your applications. Instagram will assign an OAuth client_id and client_secret for each of your apps.
