Remove Tough Strings from Celery

Make Celery and Apple Salad can be a little tough and chewy sometimes and when they are, it is best to remove them so that you can enjoy the rest of the celery, either as a snack or as part of a dish.

Steps

  1. Make a small cut at the base of the stalk. This cut should be about 3cm/1.1" in length.
  2. Use a sharp knife to pull the strings down towards the cut. When the strings reach the cut, the will lift automatically.
  3. Try an alternative method. If preferred, you can use a vegetable peeler and lightly peel off the strings.

Tips

  • Even though the strings are removed, you can easily stuff the inside with cream cheese or any other spreadable cheese.
  • Celery should be rinsed under cold running water to remove the grit from the root end.
  • Once the string is removed, diced celery makes an excellent addition to soups requiring a vegetable base. Celery is also excellent with salads, casseroles, fried rice and vegetable stuffings.
  • You can also stuff the celery with spreadable cream cheese and olives, or Pimento cheese spread. Eat as is or with a sandwich for a healthy treat.
