Replace an Exhaust Manifold Gasket
How to replace an exhaust manifold gasket. A simple explanation.
Steps
- Open the bonnet and locate the exhaust manifold (With petrol vehicles the exhaust manifold will usually be underneath the carburettor and air intake, diesels do not have a carburetor and therefore do not apply)
- Remove the carburettor and air intake (with petrol, with diesels the air intake is usually elsewhere)
- You'll now be left with the exhaust manifold exposed; disconnect the exhaust manifold from the exhaust down pipe by undoing the bolts that hold them together, now disconnect the exhaust manifold where it joins the engine block by undoing the bolts/studs that hold it there
- Once you've done that then remove the exhaust manifold completely from the vehicle, leave it and all the fixings somewhere safe
- Now, you should see the remnants of the old exhaust manifold gasket stuck to the side of the engine block, remove any excess with a scraper or similar.
- Make sure the area is clean where the new gasket (usually metal) will go
- Fit the new gasket ensuring it's on the right way
- Put the exhaust manifold back into place and do up the studs/bolts holding the manifold to the engine block
- Finally tighten the bolts securing the manifold to the down pipe
- Job done!
Tips
- Wear gloves and eye protection if you feel it's necessary
- If you have trouble with the studs, use a hacksaw to cut a slit in the top, the stud can now be used like a big self tapper (ie with a screwdriver) while still being as secure as a stud
