Stop a Rug from Moving on a Wooden Floor
To prevent damage to your area rugs and hard surface floors you need to have non slip under pad. Here is how to get the proper pad for your rug.
Steps
- You need to measure your rug width and lengthwise before going to buy the pad. DO NOT include the fringes in your measurement. Some stores have pre-cut pieces others can cut to size. Having your rugs measurements when you go shopping guarantees that you will get the right size.

- To lay the pad and rug together will usually need 2 people unless your rug is small. Roll your rug up and put it aside, lay down the rug pad where you want the rug to be, keeping in mind that the rug pad is a bit smaller than rug.
- Move rug to where the pad is making sure it is going to lay over the pad by {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} on all sides. Once you have the rug straight slowly unroll it over the pad. For smaller rugs it can be easily to pick up rug and pad together if you needed to straighten it. For larger rugs you will need to roll the rug back up and reposition it correctly over the pad.

Tips
- For small area rugs 5x8 and smaller you need to have a thin non-slip rug pad. If the pad is too thick it can cause a tripping hazard.
- The rug pad you buy should have holes in it so there is air movement between your floor and area rug.
- Quality rug pad can be cleaned by hand if it gets dirty. Simply put the rug pad in a bath of warm water and dish soap. Swish it around to remove the dirt and hang to air dry.
- For large rugs there is rug pad available that can add a bit of cushion, but a non-slip pad works as well.
- Under pad made for wall to wall carpet should Never be used under area rugs. It can trap moisture and rot your rug.

Warnings
- Same goes with little scatter mats and runners, the rubberized backing can discolor your floor. Always check with a flooring professional what can be used on your floors.
- Low quality rug pad can fall apart after a short period of time, it is best to buy a higher quality rug pad to save you money from having to replace the rug pad every year.
- If your rug is in a room where a door goes over the rug make sure there is room to allow for rug pad. If you get a rug pad that is thick the door may not open or close.
- DO NOT use rubber or foam pad on laminate, resilient, and hardwood floor as it may discolor your floor.
