Survive Pledgeship in a Fraternity

This article will show you how to survive being a pledge for a fraternity.

Steps

  1. Know that pledgeship differs from college to college and from fraternity to fraternity. You may have friends who seem like they can do whatever you want, whereas you can't do anything.
  2. Join a fraternity. Don't join one just because it's popular, but don't join one that is known to be "bad."
  3. Meet your new pledge brothers. Be nice to them. These will be the best friends of your life. They will be the only people you hang out with for the duration of your pledgeship, so you want to be friends with them.
  4. Learn the house's history. It will make your life much easier. Knowing the history is vitally important. Know the founding date, founding fathers and where they're from. Know the first initiates. these are a few examples but know everything.
  5. Don't sacrifice anything for school. School always comes first. If you find that your fraternity makes it impossible to make good grades, then quit.
  6. Don't quit just because the pledging, itself, is hard. Don't give up!
  7. Become one! Becoming one with your pledge class is the most important part. There is usually no set duration of pledgeship. Becoming one will make life easier.
  8. Know your pledge bros, know where they're from, their major, their dreams, their habits, know everything about them.

Tips

  • The whole point of pledgeship is to make you appreciate the fraternity and all that it can do for you.
  • If an active asks you who the worst pledge is, say yourself.
  • Don't give the actives a reason to hate you. If they ask you to do something, just do it. Usually actives won't ask you to do anything too stupid because they know what it's like to be a pledge.
  • Don't stick out from the crowd. Don't be a suck-up, but don't be a slacker.
  • Make friends with as many brothers as you can as well. Its harder to haze a friend than someone you barely know.

Warnings

  • Don't let anyone force you to drink more than you can handle. People will have more respect for you if you know when to say when.
  • Never do anything dangerous or stupid. Often when brothers ask you to do something that crosses the line of what's safe or normal, they aren't being serious. Its Ok to say no in these situations.
