Sync Files Between Computers Using Dropbox

Dropbox is an online file storage service that allows users to upload, share, and access files and folders via mobile and desktop applications as well as a browser-based interface. The service offers free and paid services consisting of varying data and sharing restrictions and provides software applications for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Android, Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry, iPhone, and iPad. This article will walk you through the process of syncing files between multiple computers using Dropbox.

Steps

  1. Download the Dropbox Desktop application on every computer you wish to sync files with by going to the Dropbox Download page. Note: The desktop application is currently available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
    • Log in using your account information or select the “I don’t have a Dropbox Account” and follow the onscreen instructions to create one when prompted during the installation. After you’ve installed the application, a folder called “Dropbox” will be added to your hard drive.
  2. Add files to the Dropbox folder on your hard drive via any computer you’ve installed the desktop application to.
  3. Log in to the Dropbox desktop application on any other computer using the same login/account info. Dropbox will automatically sync your files between all Dropbox folders on the associated computers.

Warnings

  • Folders within your Public folder cannot be shared.
