Text on an iPod Touch Using iMessage

Do you want free, easy and unlimited texting? You may not have a phone, but if you have an iPod Touch, you're in luck! iMessage has been introduced with the iOS 5 update. With iMessage, you can send text and multimedia messages to other iOS 5 (and later) devices and they can text you back, even without a cell phone plan! It's simple, unlimited and absolutely free.

Steps

  1. Make sure your iPod has been updated to iOS 5 or later. Connect to iTunes and install the update. Once you've done that, you will automatically get the iMessage app.
  2. Connect to the internet wirelessly.
  3. Set up iMessage with your existing Apple ID. This will enable others to use your email address to message you.
  4. Go to Contacts (located at the bottom of the screen) and add your friend's number or email address. You can add their name, the company they work for, their email address and a lot more.
  5. Tap the "Messages" app at the bottom of your iPod to open it.
  6. Type in somebody's name (or number) and tap the number/email address you want to message.
  7. Tap the text field and start Type Quickly on Your iPod Touch your message. It can be as long as you like. After you're done typing, hit send.
    • To send a picture or video, tap on the Camera icon on the left of the text field. You can choose to take a picture with the camera or pick one from your photo album. Sending multimedia generally take longer to send than text messages.
    • Your message will be in a blue speech balloon on the right side of the screen, while the recipient's message will be in a grey balloon on the left side of the screen.

Tips

  • Use Group Conversation to talk to multiple people at once. To do this, choose the option where you can add an email. Add the people you would like from your contact list and type a message in the box to start the conversation.
  • If a friend doesn't use iMessage, then try to contact by email or download the app they're using for free, like TextMe.
  • Therefore, there are many third party applications that can allow you to send text messages, such as Text on an iPod Touch Using TextPlus.
  • The following devices do not update to iOS 5 and cannot use iMessage:

    • 2nd generation iPod Touch (up to iOS 4.2.1)
