Jailbreaking Method to Change Home Screen Background

This method assumes that your iPod Touch is using an operating system less than iOS4. If so, proceed with the jailbreak.

  1. Sign into iTunes (v10) and plug in your iPod Touch. Note: do not let your iPod Touch sync.
    • Unplug after you have plugged in your iPod Touch and iTunes. And then immediately re-plug your iPod into iTunes. You should now be in version 3.1.1.
  2. Once you have upgraded your iPod, scroll to the bottom of the page and click "install appSnapp." Your iPod Touch will go back to the home screen and say, "downloading" followed by the particular percent it has downloaded.
  3. Once it has downloaded, and restarted itself, you must go to the home screen and click on the new icon called "installer."
  4. Once in the "installer" program, go into the category called "install" at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Once in this category, go into "all packages."
  6. Once in this category, scroll down the thousands of applications to "C" and install the application "customize."
  7. Once that is installed, go back to the homepage (within the installer) and go back to "install" Go through "all packages" once again and download "summerboard."
  8. Once installed go back to your "install" home page and scroll down to "themes (summerboard)" and download Louie Mantia Alt Colors. This particular theme, will turn your wallpaper into your home screen. Feel free to download any of the other themes and experiment with your favorite ones. Some even come with different home screen icons.
  9. You can also download anything from the "themes (customize)" list to use with your new "customize" program.
  10. After you have downloaded these few things, go back to your home screen and when its says "slide to lock," do so. Then go into your new application called "smbp refs" and go in to "themes" and click Louie Mantia Alt Colors. This will then change your homescreen background to your wallpaper of choice.
  11. In "customize," you can change almost every other aspect of your iPod Touch, other then the "springboard." Just download the applications from "themes (customize)" and then change it to the particular preferences that comes with the package you download.

Tips

  • This should not permanently harm your iPod. If you don't like the new look or are worried that it might go wrong, just plug your iPod Touch into iTunes and click "restore."
  • This does not work with a second generation iPhone.
  • If you turn your iPod off after jailbreaking, and it won't turn on, follow these steps.
    • Open iTunes
    • Hold the home button and the lock button at the same time for 10 seconds.
    • Let go of the lock button and hold home until iTunes recognizes that your iPod is in recovery mode.
    • Restore your iPod, and jailbreak it one more time.
  • You can always uninstall your applications if you decide you do not like them. All you need to do is go in to "uninstall" at the bottom of the screen (in "installer") and choose the relevant application.

Warnings

  • This is legal. You paid for your iPod, so you can do whatever you want with it.
  • Jailbreaking your iPod will void your warranty.
  • Do not install anything from Installous if it says that it is from an unknown/untrusted source. It may contain a bug. There are exceptions to this though, with such things as Mobile Mail and Maps.
  • This may not work with iPod 3g. One method in this guide requires you to jailbreak your iPod. To jailbreak your iPod, you will need to have version 3.1.2. If you have a lower version, you will need to upgrade. To upgrade you'll need to go to iTunes, plug in your iPod, and press update.
