Update an App from the App Store on an iPhone

You can update Apps on your iPhone directly from the App Store, or from your computer by using iTunes. There is an Updates tab in the bottom right of the iOS App Store. The process using iTunes is a bit more complex, but allows updates to be downloaded and stored for downgrading at a later time.

Steps

Updating via the App Store

  1. Open the App Store. If prompted, enter your Apple ID and password and tap Sign in.
  2. Tap Updates.
    • Available updates will be indicated by the red notification bubble over the button.
  3. Tap Update All. This is in the upper right corner.
    • You can also tap the Update next to each app if you'd like to only update certain ones.
    • Apps in the process of updating will have their icons greyed out on the home screen until they are finished. You can pause each update via the home screen or stop the update via the Updates tap in the app store.

Updating via iTunes

  1. Power on your iPhone.
  2. Connect the iPhone to your computer via USB.
  3. Launch iTunes. iTunes may launch automatically when you connect your device depending on your computer's settings.
  4. Click the page selection menu. This is located between the navigation arrows and the iPhone icon and is used to display different pages in iTunes.
  5. Click Edit.
  6. Check the box next to Apps.
  7. Click Done. This is at the bottom of the menu. The apps option will now appear in your dropdown menu.
  8. Click Apps.
  9. Sign in with your Apple ID. Enter your username and password and click Sign in.
    • If you are already signed in to your Apple account in iTunes, then you will not be prompted.
  10. Click Updates. All apps that need updating will appear in a list.
    • The text, “All apps are up to date” will appear in the middle of the page if nothing needs updating.
  11. Click Update All Apps. This is in the lower right corner of the updates screen. A chime sound will play when apps are updated.[1]
    • You can select an app and click Update next to it if you want to update specific apps.
  12. Tap the iPhone icon. This is located to the right of the page selection menu.
  13. Tap Sync. Your phone will begin to sync, indicated by the progress bar at the top. When complete, all of the apps you updated in iTunes will also be updated on your iPhone.

Tips

  • The App Store homepage icon will also have a notification bubble when there are updates available. You can turn this off by going to ⚙ Settings > Notifications > App Store > Toggle Slider Next to Badge App Icon.
  • You can turn automatic updates on or off by going to ⚙ Settings > iTunes & App Store > Toggle Slider Next to Updates under Automatic Downloads.
  • If an app becomes stuck while updating, try signing out and back into the app store. If that does not work, try using iTunes to sync apps.[2]
