Use the Power Control Widget on a Droid

Ugh, the power just ran out on your Droid again. How do you stop that from happening without having to recharge it all the time? Well, you can use your Droid's Power Control Widget to reduce the amount of power it uses, which saves you the hassle of having to constantly recharge your phone. Because who wants to do that?

Steps

  1. Press your screen and hold down your finger for a while. Select Widget on the window with four options that soon appears. Scroll through the Widget list to find Power Control, select it, and allow it to load to your home screen. The area outlined in red on the image is what the Power Control Widget looks like. See how it's composed of five different icons? Each of these icons represents an aspect of the Power Control Widget that is automatically set to on. You can turn some of them off to save power.
  2. Press the Wifi icon, the one all the way to the left on the Power Control Widget bar, to cut the power to your Droid's Wifi functionality. If you connect to the internet with 3G, you don't need Wifi unless you're in an area with no cell service. If you enter such an area, just press the Wifi icon again to turn Wifi functionality back on. You may also want to keep Wifi on if you'd be getting a fast connection from a nearby wireless hotspot. Turning off Wifi will save a fair amount of power.
  3. Press the Bluetooth icon, second to the left, to cut the power to your Droid's Bluetooth functionality. Turn it on if you're using a Bluetooth device like a wireless headset and turn it off if you're not. Turning off Bluetooth will save just a bit of power, but every little bit counts.
  4. Press the GPS icon in the center of the bar to to cut the power to your Droid's GPS functionality. Turn it on if you're using an app that uses GPS, like Google Maps Navigation for driving directions, and turn it off if you're not. Turning off GPS will save a significant amount of power.
  5. Press the Sync icon, second to the right, to cut the power to your Droid's Sync functionality. Sync keeps your contacts, email, calendar and other features readily available and constantly updated, which saves you time and effort when you're using your phone. You probably want to keep Sync powered up, since it's almost constantly useful and would save you hardly any power at all if you turned it off.
  6. Press the Display Brightness icon, all the way on the right of the bar, to adjust your Droid's display brightness. The three settings are bright, medium, and off, and the screen is automatically set to bright. Try out the medium setting to see if it's bright enough for you to do most of what you want to do on your phone. The medium setting saves a significant amount of power compared to bright.
