Allow Pop ups on Google Chrome

Pop-ups used to be the bane of internet browsing. They’d come at you from every angle and refuse to budge. Closing them was a fruitless endeavor. Years have passed since those dark times, and virtually all browsers disable pop-ups by default. Chrome is no exception. Sometimes you need pop-ups though, so follow this guide to allow them for the sites you trust.

Steps

  1. Click the Chrome menu (☰). This is found in the top-right corner of the Chrome browser. Click "Settings" towards the bottom of the menu. This will open a new tab in your Chrome window which will allow you to adjust the browser settings.
  2. Click the "Show advanced settings" link. This is located at the bottom of the list of settings. The settings list will expand after clicking the link.
  3. Open the Content Settings window. Click the Content settings... button. This is located under the Privacy section. Clicking the button will open a new window.
  4. Scroll down to the "Pop-ups" section. By default, Chrome does not allow any sites to use pop-ups for security reasons. Pop-ups can make your computer susceptible to virus infection, and some sites make them very difficult to close. You can change it to allow all sites to use pop-ups, but this is not recommended. Instead, if you need pop-ups for specific sites, they should be enabled one by one.
  5. Add sites to your exceptions list. Click the Manage exceptions.. button. In the "Hostname pattern" column, enter the website that you want to allow pop-ups from. Make sure that the drop-down menu next to the entry is set to "Allow". When you are done adding websites, click Done.[1]
    • Only enable pop-ups from sites that you trust.
  6. Close the Settings tab. Reload the web page to let the new settings take effect. If the pop-ups will still not load, make sure that any Change-Google-Chrome-Extensions-Settings are not blocking them as well. If they are, add the website you want to allow to that extension as well or disable the extension.

Warnings

  • When you allow pop-ups on Google Chrome your computer may slow down or freeze (stop functioning). Some pop-ups can contain animation or videos that automatically start playing when the pop-up opens. This hogs your Internet speed and computer hardware causing slow web browsing or possible operating system crashes.
