Apply to a Good Culinary School

You want to go to culinary school.  But not just any culinary school--the best!  Here is how to apply to it.

Steps

  1. Find a list or top culinary schools.  This can be done by using Google or some other similar search site.  Search the "top 10 culinary schools (country)" or something like that.  When searching, you might want to put quotes around the words "culinary schools" so that you don't get results for other types of schools.
  2. Find the culinary school's website.  Do this by searching the school's name online.
  3. Enter the school website and see if you would like to go there.  Look at what types and lengths of programs the school offers, and at the campus life.  Will you live on or off campus?
  4. If you decide that you want to apply, look on the site for how to apply.  Some schools may have online applications right there on their sites.  Others have special forms for you to print off, fill out, and send in.  Some may require the Common Application (commonapp.org).
  5. Whatever the type of application, fill it out exactly according to directions.  Make sure to maximize your culinary achievements.
  6. Wait for results.

Tips

  • Try to get some scholarships to help pay for school.  You can search "culinary school scholarships," or, if you're still in high school, for scholarships specific to seniors from that high school.  Many scholarships require a copy of your school acceptance letter.
  • Try to go on a campus visit before you apply.  If you live less than four hours away from the school you are applying to (and you will have to put your home address on the application), this can be an important factor in admission at competitive schools.  Try to have an interview with an admissions officer while you are there.
  • Apply to at least three schools, and make sure that one of them is a "safety school."

Warnings

  • Make sure that you really want to do culinary school.
  • Make sure you have a safety school, because if you don't get in somewhere, you will have to spend a year trying to get a job as unskilled labor while you wait to be able to apply somewhere again.
