Ask Your Mom for a Bra
This page will tell you how to ask for a bra without her (or you) freaking out. It's as simple as asking her for new clothes. This guide will show you how to ask your mother or female guardian for a bra.

Steps
- Make sure you are ready, or feel you need one. Do your nipples show through your shirt in an uncomfortable way? Is it painful when you run? Do they just jiggle too much??
- Practice stating your problem, while alone, as bluntly as possible. This way there will be no misunderstandings. Say something along these lines: "Mom, I think I'm ready for a bra. Do you think we could go shopping for them sometime soon?"
- Don't be shy to ask. Don't be nervous. It's natural in every young woman's life when a bra becomes a necessity in their lives. Your mother also was once a young woman who needed a bra and now it's your turn. Avoid shaking and sweating and approach her with your normal self confidence. She'll be concerned if she sees you so nervous.
- Ask! Moms were young once, too, and they've bought plenty of bras before. If your mom is surprised, it's probably because you've grown up quicker than she expected. Try to catch her while she is in a good mood alone. Maybe in the garden or reading a book, or maybe even on a walk.
- Drop a few hints. Say things like "Mom, this shirt is too tight!" or "I need a tank top under this shirt.". Or you could even purposely try on small shirts at the mall and she'll realize you need one.
- Wait for the perfect time. It may feel awkward to just say ask for a bra. You may want to wait for a time when other people won't be listening in.
- Ask her to measure you and go shopping when your dad and/or siblings aren't going. Your mom is a girl after all and she has done what you're about to do before.
- If she says "no", don't freak, just ask her another time, keep asking her, and she will buy you one sometime.
Tips
- Another good way to ask is while you are alone without your siblings and your dad in the car with your mom while she is driving. She will be 3/4 concentrating on driving and 1/4 concentrating talking to you. It is way less embarrassing because you both aren't looking straight at each other. Don't feel too bad about asking your mom or anyone else, because they went through it too.
- There's no reason to be embarrassed about needing a bra. It's a normal part of growing up. If you'd rather keep it quiet, though, you may want to avoid stores with large crowds or where you always seem to see people you know.
- Remember, don't ask your mom for a bra when she's in a bad mood or busy. wait until she is in a good mood and clear of things to do. In this way, she will be more likely to say yes.
- If you are in a shop and see a bra that you think would fit you then you could say "Mom, can you come and look at something that I have found?". It's another way of asking for one.
- If you don't have a mom or your mom's always busy, ask an aunt or older sister to help you. If you don't have any older woman figure in your life, you'll have to resort to asking your dad. Try saying "Dad, can you take me to the mall for girl things?" Meet up with him in a different section of the mall when you are done.
- Don't be afraid, she won't be mad if you ask!
- Try grabbing a bra to "try" on the way to the dressing room with your mom. She'll see whether it's the right time for you to wear it or not.
- Most girls get non-padded bras when they wear a bra for their first time.
- Start out with a Cami bra and work your way up.
- Try on different bras to find one that is the most comfortable & suitable for your shape & needs.
- Go to somewhere where they have a professional fitting service. This way you'll have an expert who can find you the best size.
- Don't be embarrassed about taking of your top if your using a professional fitter. They almost always let you keep it on.
- Get a Cami with a bra attached first and then work your way up.
- Don't worry about spending too much on your first few- you will mostly grow out of these quickly. It's better to wait a bit before you begin to splurge.
- If you already developed mature breasts and your mother doesn't allow you to wear a bra yet, you should just show her your breasts because she has to know that you need a bra now!
- If you are too nervous to ask (via texting notes or face to face) put a bra you think will fit you in your shopping cart at the store and when you mom and you meet eye contact and nudge your head toward it. Your mom will most likely say yes or no to it, so try to do it when she's in a good mood. If that doesn't work, your mom will most likely get you when you're alone and when you're ready. If you have younger sisters, don't worry because they'll get there one day. But if you have brothers try to get it when you and your mom are alone.
- If you have a friend that wears a bra you should ask them when they got it and how they asked because they got a first bra too.
- Tell her that all the girls at school wear bras. And you would like to be like your friends. To make it more believable, give an example of one of your friends that she knows. If talking to the parents of a friend who wears bras will reassure her, it is worth offering this.
Warnings
- Don't ask for one when you're in a crowded place. It's most likely that people will hear you, and there will be some embarrassment between you and your mom!
- Don't talk to little sisters about it first because they will probably tell your mom in a very "ungentle" way.
- Your first bra may make you itch. This is normal, and should go away as soon as your skin has adjusted to having a piece of elastic where it has never had one before.
