Be Different and Stand Out from Others

Do you want to be recognized by everyone you know (and even many you don't know)? You can single-handedly have conformity eat your dust. Here are some steps to help you to be different and stand out.

Steps

  1. Fashion is crud. Style is what really matters. Never wear things because somebody else is wearing it. If you want to be different, then you have to be your own role model.
  2. Be outgoing. Some people may be intimidated by your newfound uniqueness, but don't let that get you down. There will be people who like your utter disdain for anything popular.
  3. Do things you like. You might even want to look for strange new activities that you've never heard of, remembering to be safe. For example, when others are ordering burgers, order a vegetarian hoagie or when others are ordering a pepperoni pizza, order one with just cheese and mushrooms on a whole wheat crust.
  4. Instead of watching the Super Bowl, or other popular sports, practice your yoyo or magic tricks.
  5. Offer to help one or both parents with chores, if you normally run the other way when jobs need to be done.
  6. Listen to jazz, blues, or rockabilly music, if your crowd normally listens to hip hop, alternative, punk, metal, and so on.
  7. Learn to play a tuba or trombone instead of a guitar or piano.
  8. If you are a gal, ask a guy for a date and pick him up in your car.
  9. If you are a guy, ask a gal for a date, but have her pick you up in her car.
  10. If you go to school, ask your teacher for an extra-credit assignment, if you normally dislike homework.
  11. If you normally wear blue jeans and a colored shirt, wear all black or a business suit, at least one day of the week.

Tips

  • Be different, but always be yourself. You may loathe popular things, but always keep your mind open for things you truly like.
  • Find a role model. Someone who is different than Justin Bieber. Someone who you can look up to and who inspires you. They don't even necessarily have to be alive, people from history make just as good (if not better) role models than any movie star.
  • Don't care about what people think of you, but don't ignore it. If someone dislikes you because you're "Emo", "preppy" or hangout with certain people, don't care for them. But if someone dislikes you because they think you're a jerk, because you do in fact act rude or come off as that, pay attention to that. Try to tone down or change whatever unfriendly vibe you might be giving off. Apologize, or try to talk to the person to solve the problem and explain you weren't trying to be like that.
  • Don't be afraid to be a nerd. It's probably not the best idea to ignore hygiene and/or eating in favor of studying, but my point is, don't be afraid to act smart just because many people aren't.
  • Don't be different for the sake of it, you shouldn't feel like it's a chore doing unique things. For example, if everyone is ordering a burger, don't feel that you have to order something different just so you can be unique.
  • Do things with your friends, even if they're popular activites, you still need to maintain your friendships.

Warnings

  • Don't try too hard. Be yourself, because nobody likes a poser.
  • Don't ever try being like someone else because you will regret it.
  • Ask yourself 'what are you doing'? If the answer is positive, go ahead.
  • If you are uncomfortable when being around people, it means you're not being yourself.
  • Adverse effects of not fitting in as a teenager may include social isolation and abuse of any kind.
