Be an African American Scene Kid

Are you an African American that needs help becoming a scene kid? Well, here are some tips to help you with that.

Steps

  1. Hair: Hair is the most important part of a "scene kid". For most, they cut their hair themselves. Add crazy colors or get animal print in your hair as well to stand out from everyone else. You may also want to get a relaxer done at a salon, or get it texturized. You can do almost anything with afro hair. Try extensions, or a weave. Getting it done at a salon is more pricey but worth it. You'll also have to get a touch-up every month. Get it layered by doing it at home or at the salon. If you don't want to go to the extreme, try clip in extensions instead of actually dying it. Okay so a lot of people have been saying, "Oh yeah if you tease your hair when its relaxed everything will be fine!" No it will not! If you tease your hair to the extreme every day, it will break your hair off! You could just tease it slightly or just wear cute bows or something... For random inspiration you can always Google celebrity scenesters like: Jeffree Star, Kiki Kannibal, Blair Ravish, Geoffrey Paris, Amour Hilton, Audrey Kitching, and Eddie Vigiletti. (Just randomly naming a few, there are many others out there)
  2. Outfits: Shop at Hot Topic, Spencer's, or anywhere you can get band shirts. These are the best places to select an outfit. You're going to need a lot of band T-shirts, HK shirts, Hoodies and things that can help you stand out of the crowd. For jeans, wear skinny jeans in the color of your choice. You can get these in Hot Topic or PacSun. If you want to wear a skirt, do not wear it below the knees and always wear leggings underneath. For shoes, wear flats of any bright color - Vans, One-Star, DC, or bright sneakers – but make sure they are bright.
  3. Social Sites: The second biggest part is you have to have some type of social networking site! Facebook is simple but you need to show yourself off with people who would understand you more, example TUMBLR. If you're scene your blog shouldn't be like summer and extremely happy. It should most likely be black and white, grudge, of depressed blog, but if that's not your style stick with Facebook and show yourself off. You should have at least 500+ friends! And on tumblr 100+ followers. (:
  4. Photos: Take pictures from all angles by yourself or have a friend to help you. Most scene people have a pro-photo shoot, but if you don't want to have a photo-shoot then you can always edit them using photoshop. Take pictures with all your friends and some by yourself. Just have fun.
  5. Jewelry: Go out and buy jewelry of all kinds. Don't get huge hoops that your arm can go through, people will think you're a poser. Buy necklaces of all kinds, from cartoon to pearls. For bracelets, you can get a gel one of any color or you can make your own by going to your local craft store.
  6. Music: Listen to all types of rock, techno, and other types of music. For more info, search for scene music, but make sure you know your music and bands, and don't fake it. The worst thing that could happen is say you love this band when talking to a real scene kid and have them talk about one specific member and you don't know their names. Good bands to start out with are; Blood on the Dance floor, Geoffrey Paris, Ra Ra Riot, brokencyde, and LMFAO. Last.fm is a good website to find other bands that you may like.
  7. Get into the scene lingo. When talking in a text message use words like this: lyke, gawd, STFU, betch, and omfg. You can also come up with your own words but make sure they sound good and they're original. If in person abbreviations like STFU, omfg, omg, and lol are okay. But lmfao and rofl are better left to texting or chatting online. In person say things like: plastic, skank, so ravish (if something is cute), legit, bitchin', ballin', and hella are good scene talk. You can also add your own twist to things. Like this: Lawlz= Lol,ikreee= I know right, kulli= Kool & ect. Go crazy!
  8. Be yourself! Scene is all about being original and having your own personality. This is one of the easiest steps in becoming "scene." You have to be the center of attention. Scene kids are mostly Random and bubbly. Which adds to the hair and clothes. Though, don't expect EVERYONE to like you because they won't and you should not be doing this to get cooler.

Tips

  • You do not need to tease your hair to be scene, Be yourself.
  • Don't take crap from anyone. If they don't like you, just ignore them.
  • If you're scared to color your own hair than get single color clip-in extensions or grow a bit of your hair long and color that. The best extensions to get are made from human hair.
  • To get the big hair look, get a choppy/razor cut layers to help and get a lot of hairspray.
  • You might want to get a weave and have that cut in choppy layers because cutting black hair that jagged might cause split ends. If you don't want a weave get some clip-in extensions and have those layered.
  • To help you with scene hair, go to YouTube and look under "scene hair."
  • If your parents don't want you to color your hair, then don't; just get extensions. The hairstyle that most parents like is the side bang with a low side ponytail slightly teased.
  • Go to concerts and support your local band by looking them up on Myspace.
  • Make sure you go to a hair store of your choice and heat protect to help your hair when you flat iron it. To keep your hair healthy try to wrap your hair at night with a scarf, so you won't have to flat iron it every time you wake up.

Warnings

  • If you have a perm don't try to dye your hair by yourself; go to a salon so you won't damage your hair.
  • Change slowly, or real scene kids will think you're a poser.
  • If your parents don't like the new you, try to talk to them about it. Don't try to change at school, because once they find out you disobey them you will lose their trust.
  • Go to shows where scene kids are always a sure find, at bands like Bring Me The Horizon and Brokencyde, 30H!3, Millionaires, etc. They can give you a good idea of how to be scene. Just don't talk to the scene kids about being scene your you'll get a bad reputation and will be labeled poser or wannabe.
  • If you are scared of being made fun of, then don't become a scene kid -because you're going to get talked about. Most people will make fun of your hair and style and call you mean names. Ignore it.
  • Beware of copying what you see on YouTube because most are made by posers or people making fun of scene kids.
  • Also, if none of this works...just be you instead of being a scene kid. Being scene isn't worth anything.
