Become a Fashionable Teenager

Fashion isn't about flaunting the most expensive designer brands or having an endless wardrobe. Even with the most high end clothing you can still look terrible if you don't know how to coordinate everything you have. Fashion is about expressing your personal style and using creativity to pull together unique outfits that you feel good in. You don't need to dress by what the fashion magazines say, be confident in what you are wearing and be a trendsetter, people will admire you for that.

Steps

  1. Research designers and look at their ready to wear collections. True, you probably won't be able to buy that fabulous Marc Jacob dress, but it helps to have some inspiration.
  2. Look at reputable fashion magazines such as Vogue, Ellen, or Glamour. If you want something targeted for your age group, try Teen Vogue or Seventeen. Again, these are awesome sources for inspiration (and fashion gossip!).
  3. Read blogs. This works can be used in place of magazine subscriptions, or as another source of information. Blogs have many different purposes - Style Bubble is a popular "everything" blog, and blogs like Streetpeeper focus on street style. Some more blogs are: Cheap chica (low budget), The Coveteur (like closet tours).
  4. Shop for clothes that are fashionable. You don't need to shop at stores like Abercrombie and Hollister to be fashionable (actually, these stores are often frowned upon in the fashion industry.) In fact, you'll have better luck at thrift stores! This decade in fashion takes vintage and adds a twist to it. Try places like Goodwill or Salvation Army for excellent vintage clothing/re-wearable clothing. If you don't want to shop vintage try department stores like Macy's or Nordstrom. They have a wide selection of clothing, so you are bound to find what you are looking for. Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters are more "mainstream", but you can still find some great things!
  5. Flaunt your new style. Don't try to match things. The fashion industry is not about matching. Look at silhouettes from designs you like and emulate them. Or even better, create your own designs! This way, people will notice what you're wearing, and it will become a trend.

Tips

  • Shop at cute boutiques or antique clothing stores. There are plenty of clothes and accessories. You might be surprised at what you find!
  • Don't be snotty with people. Respect their style, even if they do just follow the crowd.
  • There are more designers than Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Prada and Dior! Research them, love them! But don't worship them.
  • People don't care if you are rich. In fact, with all the fake bags, wearing a bag with a giant logo will just make you look tacky. Don't flaunt your money. Be conservative with it. Of course, logos aren't terrible, but if you can't afford it never buy a fake one! Remember to smile.
  • Forget about brands. Fashion is not a tee with "American Eagle" plastered on the front. Labeling yourself is a stupid thing to do and just proves that you are more of crowd follower than a fashion forward teen.
  • Try not to dress like a slob everyday. It's okay to have the occasional lazy day where you just chill out in jeans and a sweatshirt, but don't do it everyday. It doesn't portray a tasteful image.
  • Don't follow the group, fashion describes your personality. Let people know who you are by showing it in your way with fashion. Get inspired with yourself!
  • Fashion is about describe yourself with your clothes and look the only thing that you need is creativity and try to have some essentials. For example: My essentials are bows, my style is kinda cute and fashion.
  • If you don't have much money, you can always go to thrift shops or second hand shops.Just make sure that the clothes you buy are of good brands.

Warnings

  • Don't spend all your money on "fad" items, these will go out of style in a few months and you will be stuck with no money and an outdated wardrobe. Instead invest your money in well made classics that will never go out of style and you can wear for years. Some of these classic styles are blazers, basic sweaters, button-up collard shirts, converse, blue jeans, and clothing in neutral colors and prints such as plaid and stripes.
  • There are people that cut down on fashionistas because they don't follow the crowd. Don't listen to them. Originality is the most important thing in fashion. If you aren't yourself (everyone is original because everyone is different). How can you be fashionable?
  • Don't follow a trend! Set it! Shop vintage, boutique, even thrift, you won't know what you'll find there!
