Block Contacts on WhatsApp

WhatsApp allows you to stop a contact from sending you messages, seeing when you were last online, viewing your profile photo, and more by blocking them. You can block a contact on WhatsApp on your Android, iPhone, or using WhatsApp Web with just a few adjustments to your privacy settings.

Steps

iOS

  1. Tap on the WhatsApp icon.
  2. Tap "Settings." The "Settings" icon is at the bottom right corner of your screen. It looks like a cog.
  3. Tap "Account."
  4. Tap "Privacy."
  5. Tap "Blocked."
  6. Tap "Add New...."
  7. Tap on a contact. Doing so will add the contact to your blocked list.
    • If you want to unblock a contact, tap on the contact from the "Blocked contacts" page, then scroll to the bottom of the "Contact Info" screen, and tap "Unblock this Contact."

Android

  1. Tap on the WhatsApp icon.
  2. Tap the menu icon. The menu icon is located at the top of the screen in the far right corner. It looks like three dots stacked on top of each other.
  3. Tap "Settings."
  4. Tap "Account."
  5. Tap "Privacy."
  6. Tap "Blocked Contacts."
  7. Tap the "Add Contact" icon. The "Add Contact" icon appears at the top right corner of your screen. It looks like a person with a plus sign.
  8. Tap on a contact. Doing so will add the contact to your blocked list.
    • If you want to add multiple contacts to your blocked list, you must add each contact one by one by tapping the "Add Contact" icon.
    • If you want to unblock a contact, tap and hold on the contact from the "Blocked contacts" page, then select "Unblock (contact name)."
  9. Block an unknown user. To block an unknown user, just tap the "Block" button that appears when an unknown number messages you. Unknown numbers are ones that are not saved in your Contacts.
    • There is currently no option to block unknown users before they message you.

Using WhatsApp Web

  1. Visit www.web.whatsapp.com on your computer.
    • Alternatively, you can click here to access the web application.
  2. Open WhatsApp on your smartphone. Tap on the WhatsApp icon to launch WhatsApp on your Android or iPhone.
  3. Open WhatsApp Web from your phone. Once you have the app open, navigating to the WhatsApp Web or desktop version is simple.
    • For iPhones, tap the "Settings" icon at the bottom right of your screen, then tap "WhatsApp Web/Desktop. You will be asked to allow WhatsApp to access your camera, then you will be directed to a QR Scanner.
    • For Android phones, make sure "Chats" is highlighted at the top of your screen by tapping on it. Tap the menu icon at the top of your screen. It looks like three dots stacked on top of each other. Tap WhatsApp Web. You will be directed to a QR Scanner.
  4. Scan the QR code. Line up your smartphone's scanner to the QR code that is shown on your computer screen. Your smartphone will automatically scan for you.
  5. Click "OKAY, GOT IT."
  6. Click the menu icon. The menu icon is located at the top left of the screen. It appears as three dots stacked on top of each other.
  7. Click "Settings."
  8. Click "Blocked."
  9. Click "Add blocked contact."
  10. Click on a contact. Doing so will add the contact to your blocked list.
    • To remove a blocked contact from your blocked list, click the "X" next to their name. Confirm that you want to unblock the contact by clicking "UNBLOCK" when prompted.

Tips

  • There is currently no option to block unknown users before they message you.
  • You cannot unblock your number from another person's contact list.
  • When you block a contact, you will not be able to message them, and they will not be able to message you.
  • Blocked contacts will not be able to see any edits to your profile picture, name, or status updates from the time you block them.
  • Your "last seen" timestamp and "online" information will no longer be available to a blocked contact.
  • Blocking a contact neither removes you from their contact list, nor removes their entry from yours. You must physically delete this person from your Contacts in order to remove them.
  • If you decide to unblock a contact later, you will not receive any messages that were sent while they were blocked.
  • From certain indicators, users may be able to tell if you have blocked them.
  • You can still receive messages from blocked contacts while in a group chat, just not direct, personal messages.
