Type a Different Language on Windows XP

You can easily type a different language on Windows XP without getting a new operating system. You just have to know how to change your keyboard to accommodate the new language. And don't worry -- you can switch over to the original language you've been using at any time.

Steps

  1. Go to Start → Control Panel → Regional and Language Options → Add other languages.
    • Note that, in the lower box, you need to check the check box next to the words "Install files for East Asian Languages".
  2. Hit the "Details" button in the upper box.
    • Keep in mind that, on the right of the list of languages you have on your computer, you should now click "Add..."
  3. Choose your language and hit "OK".
  4. Select "Apply" (this is the first window that you opened).

Tips

  • During the process, you may need to insert the XP CD so the relevant files can be copied across to your computer.
  • A typical Windows XP CD will have a folder on the disk called "i386". This entire folder can be copied to the hard drive and then can be referenced for anything needing the Windows XP Disk. When a program asks you for the CD, select the path on the hard drive where you copied this folder to.
